Look at the activities and goals of One, the nonprofit organization Bono co-founded. One is “committed to the fight against extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa.” It “campaign[s] for better development policies, more effective aid and trade reform. We also support greater democracy, accountability and transparency to ensure policies to beat poverty are implemented effectively.” Among the specific issues One works on are the treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDs and malaria, increasing access to quality education and ensuring trade policies that “create economic growth and opportunities for the poorest people.”

gv_bdayFive years ago I boarded a flight from San Diego to Boston to attend the 2004 Internet & Society conference at the Berkman Center. This was just a month after George Bush won the 2004 election and so there was an element of group therapy to many of the panel discussions. 2004 was the year when, according to Wired Magazine, the Internet invented Howard Dean. Dean’s campaign was supposed to be the harbinger of a new era of net politics where the progressive grassroots took advantage of online tools like blogs and Meetup.com (this was before YouTube even existed) to bring about more enlightened, representative governance. Instead, according to the ever-snarky Register, ?organized religion, not net religion, won it for Bush.?

Someone should advise the government about the nature of web. In fact, the ruling party invests more on the web campaigns than all other ones. But in case of governmentality issues related to web, I haven’t seen any innovative ideas so far… Despite AKP’s great attempts on democratization, nothing happens on the Web scene. Unfortunately, it is quiet conservative when it comes to Web.

There have recently been two news about what Turkish authorities are up to: to create a Google rival and to start an email surveillance from the birth (all news below). While they play with these idiotic plans, a group of Turkish internet users had a creative idea and decided to take to YouTube ban to ECHR. Congratulations! I will try to get news about those users soon.

Pre-conference notes. It is very likely that I will not able to see Bucharest at all. Except the route from the hotel to the Parliament Palace. We stay all day in the conference hall. I don’t really mind though. If only I could get the Romanian dailies to add to my newspaper collection, my mission will be completed:)

Pork is very dominant in Romanian food. That means I am a little malnourished in terms of proteins (!) Well, I don’t eat pork. A Turkish hypocricy. I consume alcohol but not pork. Anyway, the conference is about to start… Today I am presenting sometime between 14-16. Today there seems to be a shift in focus: more about what can be done with blogging politically and financially then dealing with oppressive regimes…

As of now, I am done with my presentation. Today’s lunch was non-pork (!) and i relieved and happy.
