As Kemalist clergy excommunicates Can Dündar,

…he produces one of the most humane portrayals of Atatürk.

The film Mustafa demonstrates once again that Kemalist clergy (intellectuals, opinion leaders, cultural producers), cannot accept Mustafa Kemal as a human being. It is a suprahuman heroic entity. He has prophetic qualities. Any other portrayal is blasphemy. Can Dündar is a well-intentioned Kemalist but he could not escape being accused by these people and their militant disciples. I have watched the movie/documentary with a girl who started blurbing against the director before the movie and continued afterwards. This good work of biography has no meaning for her and others.

I would recommend the movie. It is too personal, it might ignore some of the social aspects of the early Republican years but it certainly gives clues to understand. Oh boy, those men and women around him in his later years are so familiar. He was surrounded by sycophants. He lost his closest friends and allies in political trials and he ended up surrounded with these people who would be the base of later cult of Kemalism. The cult was the reason of their existence and so they fed them. This still continues today.

Mustafa Kemal is a heavy smoker and drinker. He cannot sleep at nights, lonely and he cannot seem to have long term relations. So what? I would not lose my respect because of these but today’s Kemalist clergy is socially conservative as much as Islamists are. So this portrayal hurts them….

The Black Eagles of the Bosporus

Besiktas, the oldest sports club in Turkey, traces its origins to the autumn of 1902, when a group of 22 young men began gathering for physical exercise on certain days of the week in the Istanbul suburb which gives the club its name. Football was not part of the equation to start with. The young men kept their bodies and souls in shape through gymnastics, wrestling and weight-lifting……..

After submitting the draft, I feel a great emptiness in my life. Nothing is solved yet. 48 days left for the defense. It may still be early to get feedback, I have my own list of tasks to do. But I don’t feel to re-start before weekend. I made a new music selection I will … Read more

Farewell to Mr. Sağlam…

I don’t believe he was good for Beşiktaş, but he is not worse than the club administration. His biggest mistake was to accept the position in the beginning offered by the current administration that seems to occupy the club forever… He is good man, really good man, but goodness is not enough….

Sağlam bids farewell to Beşiktaş
UEFA.com – Nyon,Switzerland
Ertuğrul Sağlam has resigned as coach of Beşiktaş JK following their UEFA Cup exit last week. A 4-1 loss to FC Metalist Kharkiv in Ukraine on Thursday ended

Metalist Kharkiv thrashes Besiktas: 4-1

Our UEFA Cup dreams end tonight.  I now begin to feel really ashamed of the team I support. It is a helpless case. I don’t know what Beşiktaş players need more. The club has the third biggest budget. They are paid well, they have fantastic facilities. But from the administration to the players, Beşiktaş football … Read more

Albums that accompany Erkan

Museum of Communism

Two ads from the Czech Museum of Communism. Communists like Marx and Stalin had some human genes according to these visuals. found here: Get Intimate With History

Erkan is not as productive as he wants and he feels not good. These albums keep him company:

Death Magnetic by Metallica Loud-that Erkan likes normally, but disappointing. Every old Metallica song had a soul, not like these that look like each other. Good for ordinary metal listener but not enough for the Old Metallica style.
Tostaky by Noir Desir  Not good. Too loud.
Veuillez Rendre L’âme (à Qui Elle Appartient) by Noir Desir  Good, soothing.
Lateralus by Tool  I liked it. In fact, I don’t like much about the contemporary metal bands like Slipknot (but i will give’em a chance soon), Tool has some real quality.
Undertow by Tool  Not tried yet. but since I liked Lateralus. I am hopeful about it.
Favourite Worst Nightmare by Arctic Monkeys Could not like it. I love Franz Ferdinand, but I could not this FF like band and its album.
Superunknown by Soundgarden Not listened yet. I will give a chance anytime now:)

A song I love nowadays:
Sweet About Me by Gabriella Cilmi

oppps I forgot to mention:

Agent Orange by Sodom  A tribute to my high school days. A speedy thrash that thrashes anything left in your mind. Sometimes useful…

Here comes the Turkish Super League!

The league start today! Beşiktaş plays with Antalyaspor tomorrow.

Well, for those who are familiar the photo above is my season pass card. Erkan returns to İnönü. I couldn’t help buying this year’s pass. The photo used in the card is as far as I remember from the 1949-50 season when Beşiktaş defeated Fenerbahçe 1-0 and became the champion. A giant poster of this photo is hanged in Inönü Stadium Store and the title is ‘Being a BJK fan’

Before an evening of football, in two hours I will have to attend a wedding ceremony. A friend and former colleague, Erol, gets married today.
