In tribute to Sophie Lancaster

Produced by creative agency Propaganda, in association with iconic British band, Portishead, Dark Angel is a beautifully haunting rendition of Sophies story.

The Murder of Sophie Lancaster was a murder case in the United Kingdom in 2007. The victim was brutally attacked along with her boyfriend, Robert Maltby, while walking through Stubbylee Park in Bacup, Rossendale in Lancashire. As a result of her severe head injuries she went into a coma, never regained consciousness, and later died. The police said the attack may have been provoked by the couple wearing gothic fashion and being members of the goth subculture….

After Fenerbahçe, Before Manchester United game, best Beşiktaş videos…

Last Saturday we had an unexpectedly good win over Fenerbahçe: 3-0. Today we meet against Manchester United in an away game. Although our defensive line is surprisingly successful in the Turkish Super League (the least goal conceding team at the moment), I just hope we won’t concede more than 5 goals tonight:) At the very end, there is roundup on both games and of course any video recommendations are welcome…

What to do in case of fire?

Let it burn! Was tun, wenn’s brennt? (2001) is one of my all time favorite movies. I particularly like the opening scene. Wim Wenders closing speech – I’m talking about us, Europeans!

from LabforCulture Blog

Closing speech by Wim Wenders, President of the European Film Academy, during the European Culture Forum.

The speech was read out by EFA director Ms Döring, and is available for download as a PDF on the European Commission website.

A few months ago, the European Film Academy organised a think tank dedicated to “THE IMAGE OF EUROPE”.

The think tank took place under the patronage of the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, who actually joined us on that occasion and took a very active and very outspoken part in it.

Crackdown on (Çarşı) Beşiktaş fans- Hypocrisy in Turkish football

Beşiktaş Fans in Action

As of now, 36 Beşiktaş fans are banned from the stadiums for a year. Some fan leaders like Alen Markaryan are among the banned fans. Official reason is that they were “swearing”. Istanbul Police Deparment detained, interrogated, worked on the security cameras and the concluded on the ban. This is a crackdown executed by the alliance of Istanbul police and Beşiktaş administration. It is intended to destroy our famous fandom. Yıldırım Demirören, whom I name the worst Beşiktaş president ever, had a few weeks ago stated to “clean the stadium” and this is what he does now. Yes, in the last game, some fans began to swear at him but Mr. Demirören cannot tolerate any level of criticism and he does not hide his intention of “cleaning”.  After his statement, there happened to be fights in the stadiums and pro-Demirören gangs were rumored to terrorize anti-Demirören. Where the hell Police Deparment was then?

Rammstein Album Banned In Germany!

Liebe Ist Für Alle Da (standard version)

I am not surprised at all. In metalic standards, Rammstein’s new album is quite satisfying. However, contentwise, I am not surprised at all if authories limit the circulation of the album. The band is daring and challenging and we, metalheads, get the album anyway. No limitations can prevent us:)

three favs from the album:

* Pussy

* Liebe Ist für Alle Da

New Slayer album, World Painted Blood, rocks!

No doubt, World Painted Blood is not for many of my readers. And I will not even try to persuade people to listen to Slayer if they haven’t done so until now. Anyway, this is another sign of the fact that metal genre is coming back as many old bands have produced satisfactory albums recently: Testament’s The Formation of Damnation, Hordes Of Chaos by Kreator, Endgame by Megadeth and finally Metallica’s Death Magnetic are sure signs of a return. Slayer’s last album reminded me its one of older albums that included many punk covers: Undisputed Attitude Songs are faster and louder but not necessarily dark and satanic as the most classical Slayers songs are. In this sense, many hardcore fans maynot be satisfied with the album but for those like me who have a crush on punk, this is a fantastic production. Slightly punkish thrash in Slayer mode. My favorite song is “Americon” and but following songs maintain the tempo: 9. Psychopathy Red 10. Playing with Dolls…

Not Beşiktaş but Demirören loses…

The worst president of Beşiktaş was too angry when fans yelled at him last night. Check out the guy. Mr. Demirören is a good example for the fact that personal wealth is not enough for a good reputation.

It looks like he is crying here.

This is it.

I watched Michael Jackson’s This is it yesterday.   When I was 13, a friend of mine lent me his then new album, Bad. I remember liking it but I had never become a fan. A year later or so I was listening to Def Leppard’s Hysteria, which was the very first heavy metal album I listened to. I had immediately became a metalhead and I rarely tried other genres of music for a very long time. (I remember later in college attending a folk music concern because of the girl I felt in love who singing in the chorus- well, love is another matter) . Still the movie/documentary is moving. I worship the efforts made for artful performances. If MJ did not die, he would certainly come back with glory… Rest in peace, Michael. [In the mean time, this reminded me Madonna’s I’m Going to Tell You a Secret which was a good performance, too]

Erkan's Sunday morning fantasies

I supervised a Law school exam that started at 9 am on Sunday. I got up at 7:30 to be on time. Of course, there was no traffic and I ended up reading for an hour, which is certainly fine. Law school people are very alert and want all supervisors very careful. That means no more reading during the exam. That reminded me military service days when I had to wait for hours doing basically nothing. That triggered a short-term claustrophobic moment but then I started drafting a business plan on a sheet of paper. Yes, I and my roommate, Can, whom I haven’t told you about before, are seriously planning to establish a company whose focus will be “culture industries”. But whatever happens to our company plans, we also plan to launch our fanzne, Milli İstirahat, as a proper magazine. I also thought about it and made new plans. These got me excited and produced some relief my anger for the fact that I was ditched last evening 🙂 Well, it is best to focus on what I am best at and I will never but never plan to go to a date instead of a Beşiktaş game. Is there any girl that is worth to betray Beşiktaş?

Not all bands like their music used for torture…

Rage Against Gitmo

from FP Passport by Lauren Seyfried

A large contingent of American bands have joined the Close Gitmo Now campaign in direct protest of the use of their music during torture practices at Guantanamo Bay. The new campaign is led by two retired generals: Lieutenant General Robert Gard and Brigadier General John Johns. Robert Gard has spoken out in defense of the musicians, stating:

In the mean time, Rammstein’s new album is out. It is good but i was not super impressed.Just usual Rammstein I like to listen to without sensational new songs…

Nefes. The best Turkish war movie?

Official site.

Nefes can easily be argued to be the best war movie made in Turkey. Previews remind you Full Metal Jacket but i felt like it is in the mood of Apocalpyse Now. Technically it is not worse than any ordinary Hollywood war movie and its plot is well made in such a politically charged subject. According to IMDB: The film is “Story of 40-man Turkish task force who must defend a relay station.” which maybe attacked by Kurdish guerillas. The film gives in to some nationalist themes and nationalists may like the heroic stances but a clever viewer will classify the movie as an anti-war one. There are fantastic fighting scenes but psychological aspects are more dominant. There are great ethnographic insights- as some of my friends already know, I have a plan to write an etnographic piece on military service-such as a dialogue among soldiers about organ donation, soldiers’ phone talks with their relatives, soldiers’ self-entertainment events, an official waking up a soldiers and making a military sermon – which I witnessed that, too, officials are in need of talking-, Kurdish soldiers singing in Kurdish etc are great. My only objection is that there is nearly no swearing. Especially, it in the opening scene there had to be a hard dose swearing. Military talk is impossible without referring to female and male genital organs frequently:)
