Two elder statesmen of thrash metal, whom I have listened to since I was 13, released new albums. While Megadeth sounds like a dignified goodbye, Kreator feels very much alive.
It is always nice to listen to old-school thrash, and I have asked Perplexity below to find and collect major reviews. Megadeth is listenable, but I didn’t particularly like it. A Metallica cover is surprising but not successful. I prefer Kreator; I believe it is a strong album, better than Megadeth’s, but there are no particular songs I could love (maybe, Satanic Anarchy?)
Megadeth, Megadeth

Megadeth’s self-titled final album has been getting generally positive but mixed-leaning reviews: most critics see it as a strong, dignified farewell musically, held back somewhat by lyrics and Mustaine’s aging voice.forbes+4
Critical press
Many outlets frame it as a career-summing curtain call: a recap of Megadeth’s traditional strengths (riffs, solos, thrash energy) and long-standing flaws (conspiracy-laden or clunky lyrics, vocal limitations).metalinsider+2
The Guardian highlights it as tuneful but overlong, emphasizing that it encapsulates both the band’s combustible playing and Mustaine’s familiar lyrical obsessions and grudges.[theguardian]
A Forbes review stresses that the instrumental work is excellent but says Mustaine’s vocals and shallow lyrics prevent the record from reaching the heights of their classic period, so it lands more as a solid late-era entry than a masterpiece.[forbes]
Metal and rock outlets generally describe it as a “respectable” or “solid” farewell, not the best Megadeth album, but far from an embarrassment.kerrang+3
Metal/scene and fan reviews
A detailed fan-oriented review on a Megadeth-focused site calls it a “dignified ending” and gives it 8/10, praising the way it revisits different eras of the band’s sound (fast thrash, mid-tempo groove, more melodic tracks) with very strong lead guitar work from Teemu Mäntysaari, while acknowledging limitations in Mustaine’s voice and some conservative production choices.[megadeth.com]
Another enthusiast review on Reddit rates it around 8.5/10, arguing it has “a bit of everything” from across their discography and is “a great way to end their career,” again highlighting the quality of riffs and solos as the main draw.[reddit]
There is also a more negative fan strand: some threads complain about thin production, “cringe” lyrics and weak vocals, and see the Metallica “Ride the Lightning” cover as an unnecessary gimmick or “cash grab” that distracts from the otherwise solid main tracklist.reddit+1
Common points of consensus
Strengths that most reviewers agree on:
Very strong guitar work, especially the solos and the interplay between Mustaine and Mäntysaari.beatsperminute+3
Tight, energetic drumming and arrangements that effectively reference different eras of Megadeth’s catalogue.sputnikmusic+3
The closing track “The Last Note” is widely seen as an effective, emotional farewell piece that works conceptually as the band’s final statement.megadeth+2
Weaknesses/criticisms that recur:
Mustaine’s voice: often described as limited, strained or simply no longer able to carry big choruses, so the album leans heavily on its instrumental side.metalinsider+3
Lyrics: seen as shallow, repetitive or awkward, with some critics pointing to conspiracy-tinged themes that feel dated rather than provocative.theguardian+2
The Metallica cover (“Ride the Lightning”) is frequently singled out as unnecessary, muddying the emotional clarity of an otherwise coherent farewell.reddit+1
Overall verdict
Pulling these strands together: the major reviews position Megadeth’s final album as a solid, honest late-career statement that honors the band’s legacy through musicianship and stylistic callbacks, but it is not treated as a new classic; it’s praised as a respectable last chapter more than a revolutionary one.beatsperminute+4
Kreator, Krushers of the World

Kreator’s new album Krushers of the World (2026) is being very well received, with most major reviews calling it one of their strongest and most “complete” records in at least a decade.ninecircles+5
Overall critical tone
Metal outlets describe it as a revitalized, more aggressively thrash-focused Kreator that still keeps the melodic, modern side of their 2010s work.angrymetalguy+3
Several reviewers explicitly say it feels like the band “perfecting” the post-Phantom Antichrist formula and see it as a clear step up from Hate Über Alles.noizze+2
What they praise
Songwriting and cohesion: Critics highlight how the album bridges “old” raw Kreator and the more melodic, anthemic 21st‑century era, with a very unified tracklist and no obvious filler.distortedsoundmag+3
Thrash intensity: Reviews consistently stress that it’s faster, more ferocious and more purely thrash than the last few albums, while still keeping groove and hooks.tuonelamagazine+3
Performances and production: Mille’s vocals are widely described as strong and commanding, the band is tight, and Jens Bogren’s polished production is praised for balancing heaviness with clarity.mediajunkbox+2
Standout tracks: Openers like “Seven Serpents,” tracks such as “Satanic Anarchy,” “Barbarian,” and the closer “Loyal to the Grave” are repeatedly singled out as highlights and future live staples.noizze+2
Main criticisms
Some reviewers note that the album does not “reinvent the wheel” stylistically; detractors call it essentially a classic-sounding thrash record released in 2026 and question the need for such a traditional approach.metal-archives+1
A minority of takes suggest a couple of mid-album cuts are less memorable, functioning more as solid genre pieces than truly standout songs.themetalrobot+2
How it compares in their catalog
Several critics argue it is their best or most fully realized release since at least Hordes of Chaos or Violent Revolution, and “arguably their most complete release in over a decade.”angrymetalguy+2
The general consensus is that Krushers of the World confirms Kreator as elder statesmen who are still artistically vital, offering a confident late-career statement rather than a nostalgic retread.tuonelamagazine+2
