Ian’s, a pizzeria near the Wisconsin state capitol that is sympathetic to the demonstrators, has been facilitating the process of supporters around the world who want to send pizza to the protest. They’ve fielded an order from Egypt — now that’s solidarity.

On the Front Lines in Wisconsin

from Savage Minds: Notes and Queries in Anthropology ? A Group Blog by Adam Fish

Last Monday, February 14th,

having heard a preview of the budget proposals to come, the Teaching Assistants Association (TAA) of the University of Wisconsin, Madison decided to try a different sort of tack in protest. Perhaps one that had never been tried before. They organized a campaign to get thousands of undergraduate and graduate students to sign valentines, big cards with hearts on them, saying ?I <3 UW. Governor Walker, Don?t Break My Heart? (image below). It was a great idea, or at least it seemed so at the time, when we didn?t realize just how uncompromising Governor Scott Walker was going to turn out to be.  It goes to show how naive we were.  We knew something bad was coming, but we didn?t know how bad it would be.

On the one hand these goals are vague and on the other they can only be reached with the help of the Republicans, who will hardly take Obama up on his offer of cooperation, writes the press.

Obama faces street fight down the road

by Mark Mardell (the Reporters)

The tone of the President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address will be framed by an absence, an empty seat, a politician who can’t be in the House of Representatives chamber to hear him.

American tragedy, political response, Godfrey Hodgson

from open Democracy News Analysis – by Godfrey Hodgson

There has been much speculation in the American media that President Obama?s speech in Tucson on 12 January 2011 at the memorial event for the six people murdered at Gabrielle (Gabby) Giffords?s ?Congress on Your Corner? meeting would be a ?game-changer? – that it would revive his presidency as Bill Clinton?s speech after the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995 is said to have done.
