I first recognized him on TikTok. His campaign content was addictive.
Zohran Mamdani’s stunning victory over former Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary has triggered a wide range of reactions across the political spectrum, with many describing it as a “political earthquake” that could reshape the Democratic Party1.

Progressive Celebration
Progressive leaders have enthusiastically embraced Mamdani’s victory as a sign of changing political winds. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who endorsed Mamdani, celebrated on social media, writing “Congratulations, @ZohranMamdani. Your commitment to a New York City that is affordable, inclusive, and safe for working families has inspired many throughout the city. Despite the millions spent against you by billionaires and lobbyists, you emerged victorious”8. She emphasized how Mamdani overcame significant financial disadvantages against establishment forces6.
Bernie Sanders, who had endorsed Mamdani last week, framed the victory as validation of progressive politics, stating that “maintaining the status quo is insufficient” and that “we require new leadership willing to confront powerful corporate interests”8.
Dan Pfeiffer, former senior advisor to President Barack Obama, suggested Democrats “have much to learn” from Mamdani, commenting that the NYC results send “a clear message to those in the Democratic establishment who cling to outdated politics, reciting focus-grouped messages, and are too fearful to address the pressing issues”6.
Business Community Concerns
The business establishment has expressed significant apprehension about Mamdani’s policy proposals. The Partnership for New York City, representing nearly 300 CEOs, has labeled many of his ideas as unrealistic3. Kathryn Wylde, the organization’s CEO, warned that Mamdani’s plans for a four-year rent freeze and increased corporate taxes would ultimately hurt New Yorkers: “When he states, ‘I will tax the wealthy and corporations,’ it resonates with younger individuals who think, ‘Great, that doesn’t affect me.’ However, in the end, they will face increased expenses if businesses are compelled to hike their prices due to rising costs”3.
Current Mayor’s Sharp Criticism
Mayor Eric Adams launched a scathing attack on Mamdani, calling him a “snake oil salesman” during a Fox & Friends appearance4. Adams criticized Mamdani’s ambitious proposals as unrealistic, stating “He was saying anything to get elected” and arguing that Mamdani doesn’t understand the limits of mayoral power, particularly regarding tax policy4. The mayor emphasized that “as mayor, you don’t possess the authority” to impose higher taxes on the wealthy, as that requires state-level action4.
Republican Opportunism
Republicans quickly seized on Mamdani’s victory as a political opportunity. The National Republican Congressional Committee issued a statement calling Mamdani “the new face” of the Democratic Party, with spokesperson Mike Marinella declaring: “Every vulnerable House Democrat will be associated with him, and every Democrat facing a primary will regard him as a threat”6.
Far-Right Extremist Reactions
Some far-right figures made inflammatory and Islamophobic comments about Mamdani’s victory. Laura Loomer posted unfounded claims linking Mamdani to terrorism, while Charlie Kirk made references to 9/11 in connection with Mamdani being Muslim10. These assertions have been widely condemned as lacking substantiation and being Islamophobic10.
Political Analysts’ Perspectives
Political strategists and analysts have characterized the victory as historically significant. One Democratic strategist described it as “a pivotal moment in political history,” while polling experts noted that “an unfamiliar candidate defeating Andrew Cuomo signals a transformation in leadership” as “the electorate is becoming younger, and their opinions must be recognized”1.
Gracious Concession
Andrew Cuomo himself provided a notably gracious concession, telling supporters: “Tonight belongs to him. He earned it. He emerged victorious” and praising Mamdani for running “a really smart campaign” that resonated with young people68.
The reactions underscore how Mamdani’s victory represents a significant generational and ideological shift within Democratic politics, with progressives celebrating it as validation of their approach while establishment figures and business leaders express concern about the implications of his policy agenda.
