On 25 January, the 318-member PACE elected Mevlüt Çavuşoglu as its new president at the opening of its plenary session in Strasbourg (25-29 January). Çavuşoglu is the first Turk to hold the office since Turkey’s accession to the Council of Europe in August 1949.

Turkish state-run TRT said in a statement on Friday that a ceremony would take place in Istanbul on Saturday for opening of the Turkish-language news channel. Lyon-based Euronews already broadcasts in Arabic, English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Russian for 24 hours a day. Founded in 1992 in Lyon as a European Broadcasting Union initiative, Euronews beams out into 293 million households in 150 countries by cable, satellite and terrestrial 24 hours a day with more than 400 staff from different nationalities.
