President Gül's historical visit to Iraq; another taboo broken

Turkey’s President Abdullah Gul (L) and his wife Hayrunnisa Gul (C) pose with Iraq’s President’s Jalal Talabani and his wife Hero Ibrahim Ahmed (2nd L) during a welcoming ceremony at Salam Palace in Baghdad March 23, 2009. Talabani said on Monday the Turkish separatist guerrilla group Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) must lay down its arms or leave Iraqi soil. The comments by Talabani, a Kurd, were some of the toughest made recently by an Iraqi leader against PKK rebels, who have used northern Iraq as a base to launch attacks in Turkey, straining ties between Baghdad and Ankara.REUTERS/Mohammed Jalil/Pool (IRAQ POLITICS)

Apart from the expected protesting cries from die-hard nationalists or opposition, I observe that there is even a relief. Finally we did. Turkey had to recognize the regional Kurdish government in Northern Iraq and had to start relations with it. Even in pragmatic terms, this could be the next stage. Finally, Turkish State initiates a new era, in the mean time, the President uses the word "Kurdistan". I don’t personally believe this recognition helps separatists. It is an initiative for a friendly era. Separatists might even be upset. Because all parties, all hawks from all sides, seemed to have relied on some nonnegotiable positions. What to do with a not hostile but friendly Turkey?

Yet another taboo dies in ’Kurdistan’

ANKARA – President Abdullah Gül’s first official uttering of the word ’Kurdistan’ in relation to the regional administration in northern Iraq sends shockwaves through the opposition, which fears this could encourage calls for more concessions and reveals foreign meddling.

Erkan's course on Propaganda… Kurdish rappers vs. Islamist rappers…

I have a spring semester elective course: Communication and Persuasion. Every semester, I change the content of the course but it is always related to course title. Last year, I had focused on Rhetoric itself. This year the theme is Propaganda. Students monitor election campaigns in groups. While they present their monitoring weekly, I lecture based on a book entitled as: Propaganda and Persuasion (by Garth S. Jowett and Victoria O’Donnell) By thebeginning of April, we may have produced a report on March 2009 local election campaigns.I will of course share it with you.

Today a group that focused on DTP’s Istanbul municipality campaign brought to our attention to DTP election song. Check out the election video here. There is a little bit of Kurdish rap there, too.

Another group showed us a Saadet party event where a Rapper group sings for this Islamist party…Here is the event video.  So comes the Turkish rap.

A round up on Turkey and Kurds follows…

Ahmet Turk's Kurdish, a scandal?, a crisis?

Ahmet Turk, the leader of the pro-Kurdish Democratic Society ...

Ahmet Turk, the leader of the pro-Kurdish Democratic Society Party or DTP, makes a speech in Kurdish in open defiance of Turkish laws, as he addresses his party members at the Turkish parliament in Ankara, Turkey, Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2009. Ahmet Turk’s speech in Kurdish could be used by a prosecutor as new evidence to shut down the party on charges of alleged ties to Kurdish rebels. (AP Photo)

Despite the initial media hype, i don’t see Mr. Türk’s Kurdish speaking in the Turkish parliament as a crisis or scandalous act. Interested parties will speak out, nationalist rhetorics and cliches will be employed, there will be a great fuss momentarily but most know that something has already changed. In 1980, Turkish states officially denied the existence of a language called Kurdish, and now there is already a state TV channel in Kurdish…

Ergenekon, March elections, TRT Şeş

Doğan Media Group (DMG) now recognizes that there is something called Ergenekon and they shift their energy to emphasize the failures in the legal process. This is healthier.

March elections for municipalities becomes a hotter topic day by day. CHP nominated Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu as the CHP mayoral candidate for İstanbul. This is possibly the best candidate against AKP. Although AKP’s mayori Kadir Topbaş is still more advantageous, it is possible that AKP may lose Istanbul. I have noted several times that I do not like Mr. Topbaş as a mayor. I don’t believe he would have any chance if he wasn’t an AKP candidate…

TRT’s Kurdish channel experiment continues to receive new feedback. A friend of mine is involved in a relatively popular sit-com in that channel. I have just heard…

A&G Survey, according to Milliyet, shows AKP is far ahead in competition for Istanbul mayor’s office.

"Religious Kurds become key vote in Turkey

'bi xêr hati

‘bi xêr hati | Welcome

By Mavi Boncuk

Prime minister R. T. Erdogan’s welcoming remarks for the TRT 24 hour Kurdish language TV channel 6 "TRT 6 hayırlı olsun" in Kurdish made the headlines of Turkish dailies with a variety of transliterations. Almost all of them wrong. The funniest came from Aydin Dogan’s Hurriyet and Milliyet by completely reversing the message and not welcoming it by using the word Bê’ in the wrong order. They all should have said “TRT Şeş li ser xêrê be” and to this Mavi Boncuk says ‘bi xêr hati | Hosgeldiniz | Welcome"
Headlines from Turkish dailies:

[There might be a Freudian slip- Milliyet and Hürriyet’s real intention is probably not to welcome it…]

[updated] Official Kurdish TV channels starts test broadcasting…

New TV channel uses Kurdish usage of some words in which W or X letters are used. Some Kurdish originated Turkish citizens were tried and imprisoned in the last two decades just because they had used those  words…  Use of Kurdish itself was forbidden back in 1980…. A major positive development on the Kurdish question by AKP in an otherwise banally nationalistic political context…
