OSINT Sources for Following the US-Israel-Iran Conflict

I saw two platforms mentioned several times on X  (World Monitor and USvsIran.com) and asked Perplexity to compile similar sources. Here you are:

OSINT Sources for Following the US-Israel-Iran Conflict

World Monitor (worldmonitor.app) and USvsIRAN.com — represent a growing ecosystem of open-source intelligence (OSINT) dashboards built for real-time conflict monitoring. World Monitor is an open-source project that tracks over 220 military bases, live aircraft, dark ships, and nuclear facilities, while USvsIRAN.com is an OSINT-powered dashboard that fuses signals from multiple sources to follow war-relevant developments. Below is a comprehensive, categorized list of similar tools, platforms, and accounts to build a robust monitoring setup.[1][2]

Expert Analysis & Daily Reporting

For deeper, analytical context rather than raw data feeds:

  • Critical Threats Project (AEI) + Institute for the Study of War (ISW): Publishes daily “Iran Updates” with interactive maps of assessed strikes, protest locations, and terrain control in Syria. These reports provide the most rigorous analytical context available in open source.[13][14][15]
  • CFR Global Conflict Tracker: The Council on Foreign Relations maintains a dedicated page on the US-Iran confrontation with a chronological timeline of key events sourced from major outlets.[16][17]
  • EBU Spotlight OSINT Guides: The European Broadcasting Union published a detailed OSINT intelligence guide for tracking the US naval build-up near Iran, including vessel identifiers, hex codes, Farsi search dorks, and a Sentinel Hub script for thermal anomaly detection.[18]

Flight & Aviation Tracking

Military flight tracking is one of the most active OSINT domains during the conflict. Aircraft transponders broadcast ADS-B data that can be monitored publicly.[19]

ToolURLKey Features
ADS-B Exchangeglobe.adsbexchange.comThe world’s largest source of unfiltered flight data — does not filter out US military or blocked aircraft. Essential for tracking tankers, ISR, AWACS, and airlift activity[8][19][18]
FlightRadar24flightradar24.comThe most popular commercial flight tracker with broad global coverage[12][19]
RadarBoxradarbox.comFlight tracker that includes military aircraft and air traffic control (ATC) audio monitoring[19][20]
IntelSkyintelsky.orgSpecialized OSINT radar for military flight tracking with a Middle East focus, historical flight paths, and a mobile-friendly UI[21]

Key ADS-B Tips

Vessels and aircraft often disable their transponders during operations, but embarked aviation assets (Seahawks, Ospreys, CMV-22Bs) sometimes continue transmitting hex codes that reveal carrier positions. Filtering ADS-B Exchange for “blocked” or “UHB” signals can surface unlisted military movements.[18]

Maritime & Naval Tracking

Monitoring the Strait of Hormuz and broader Persian Gulf is critical for tracking both US carrier strike groups and Iranian naval assets.

ToolURLKey Features
MarineTrafficmarinetraffic.comComprehensive vessel tracking via AIS data, including the Strait of Hormuz region[12][19][18]
VesselFindervesselfinder.comAlternative AIS-based vessel tracker; useful for cross-referencing “dark” vessels[19][18]
Marine Vessel Trafficmarinevesseltraffic.comMilitary ship tracking capabilities[12]

Note: Many military vessels disable AIS intentionally. Cross-referencing multiple maritime platforms helps identify gaps that may themselves indicate military activity.[18]

Satellite Imagery & Geospatial Intelligence

Satellite imagery has been pivotal for confirming strikes on nuclear facilities like Natanz and Fordow, and for detecting thermal anomalies at military sites.[8][18]

ToolURLCostUse Case
Sentinel Hub EO Browserapps.sentinel-hub.com/eo-browserFreeMultispectral satellite monitoring; supports custom scripts for burn scar and thermal anomaly detection[8][18][22]
Planet Labsplanet.comLicensedHigh-resolution (3m) commercial imagery; used for post-strike damage assessment and maritime detection[8][23]
NASA FIRMSfirms.modaps.eosdis.nasa.govFreeNear real-time fire and thermal anomaly detection from MODIS and VIIRS satellites — can confirm strikes and explosions at military coordinates[24][25]
USGS Earth Explorerearthexplorer.usgs.govFreeDownload satellite imagery and historical datasets[26]
Google Earth ProDesktop appFreeImport CSV watchlists of potential target coordinates for monitoring[18]

Internet & Censorship Monitoring

Communications blackouts are a common indicator of regime crackdowns and military operations in Iran.[27][8]

ToolURLWhat It Tracks
NetBlocksnetblocks.orgInternet connectivity drops and censorship events by country/region[8][18]
Cloudflare Radarradar.cloudflare.comRegional internet traffic changes, useful for identifying connectivity shutdowns[18][7]
IODAioda.inetintel.cc.gatech.eduInternet Outage Detection and Analysis — tracks large-scale outages[6]
OONIooni.orgOpen Observatory of Network Interference — detects censorship and network tampering[6]

Verification & Geolocation Tools

Misinformation and recycled footage are rampant during conflict. These tools help verify what is real and current.[28][18]

  • GeoConfirmed (org): A volunteer-driven OSINT project that geolocates and verifies videos and photos from conflict zones using satellite imagery and mapping tools. Active on X (@GeoConfirmed) with interactive conflict maps.[29][30]
  • InVID & WeVerify Plugin: A browser extension for video verification — performs keyframe analysis, reverse image search, and metadata extraction to detect manipulated or recycled footage.[8][18]
  • SunCalc: Used for chronolocation — analyzes shadow angles in photos/videos to verify the time and date of footage.[18]
  • Bellingcat Geolocation Tools: A curated resource list from the investigative journalism group, covering AI tools, mapping resources, and environmental data models for verifying visual media.[31]
  • Conflict Investigations Media Search Engine (GitHub): Searches across Bellingcat, Centre for Information Resilience, and GeoConfirmed databases to check if a media post has already been geolocated.[32]

Social Media & Telegram Monitoring

Social platforms, particularly X/Twitter and Telegram, are primary channels for real-time conflict information, but also for disinformation.[33][28]

Telegram Monitoring Tools

  • TGStat / Telemetr: Telegram channel analytics and scraping platforms useful for monitoring hyper-local district channels in Iran.[18]
  • Osavul: A professional Telegram monitoring platform covering 150,000+ channels with AI-powered narrative detection and multilingual analysis.[34]

24/7 Live OSINT Streams

These YouTube/Twitch channels run continuous monitoring dashboards:

  • NEMICO Network (YouTube + Twitch): 24/7 OSINT and Global Events Monitor combining flight radar, naval tracking, live webcams, emergency radio, and news aggregation. One of the most comprehensive live stream operations available.[12][41][42]
  • Intel Bird (YouTube): Specialized live military flight tracking using ADS-B data for the Middle East, Red Sea, and Gulf region.[43]
  • Truthdriven (YouTube): 24/7 live military flight tracker streaming unfiltered ADS-B data with callsigns, altitudes, speeds, and integrated news updates.[44]

Important Caveats and Best Practices

Misinformation Risk

Many OSINT accounts on X have been flagged for spreading misinformation, including accounts with very large followings. A University of Washington study found that several dominant “OSINT” accounts during conflict events have far fewer editorial safeguards than traditional media while achieving far greater reach. Elon Musk’s promotion of certain accounts (like @sentdefender and @warmonitors) amplified this problem.[28][33]

Verification First

  • Always cross-reference claims across multiple independent sources before sharing or acting on information.[28]
  • Use InVID/WeVerify to check for recycled footage — the EBU guide specifically flagged old clips from the June 2025 conflict circulating as current footage.[18]
  • Apply chronolocation (SunCalc) and geolocation techniques to verify time, date, and location of visual media.[18]

Transponder Limitations

Military vessels and aircraft routinely disable AIS and ADS-B transponders during operations. The absence of signals in a region can itself be an indicator of military activity, but never treat open-source tracking as a complete picture.[19][18]

Ethical Considerations

OSINT information, while publicly available, can have real consequences. An OSINT analyst’s incorrect identification of a Yemeni quarry as a Houthi bunker led to a US airstrike that killed eight civilians, including children. Responsible OSINT practice demands rigorous verification before sharing geolocation data publicly.[38]
