A Conda Nest Traveler piece: The American Passport Is Losing Its Power

Global travel is booming again, with record passenger numbers and spending, but the U.S. is losing billions in tourism as stricter entry rules and expanded travel bans deter visitors.
The administration has extended its travel ban to 39 mostly African countries and increased visa fees and processing hurdles for others, framing these measures in harsh anti-immigrant rhetoric.
In response, several countries have ended or limited visa‑free access for Americans; Brazil is highlighted as a key example of reciprocal visa requirements, contributing to the decline in U.S. passport strength.
In the 2026 Henley Passport Index, the U.S. passport ranks 10th, behind 38 other countries in visa‑free access, after falling to 12th in 2025—its worst position in two decades.
By contrast, Singapore, Japan, and South Korea lead the rankings, reflecting a broader shift of passport “power” toward Asia, while the UK has also dropped post‑Brexit.
