Hypocrisy of Ethical claims. Claude’s recent Consumer Terms and Privacy Policy updates

Claude.ai remains one of my favorite AI assistants. I never took their ethical stance seriously, so I am not that much disappointed with the recent reversal of terms.  This reversal is another example of abusing ethics.

There is significant backlash and concern about Claude’s recent Consumer Terms and Privacy Policy updates, especially regarding new data collection, retention, and opt-out requirements for user data used in AI training.techcrunch+2

Key Shifts

  • Opt-Out Data Sharing: All consumer users (Claude Free, Pro, Max, and Claude Code) must explicitly opt out by September 28, 2025, to keep chats and coding sessions private; otherwise, conversations will be retained for up to five years for model improvement and safety research.opentools+3

  • Broader Data Collection: The new policy explicitly expands data categories, now including location tracking and technical device information.reddit+1

  • Increased Liability for Users: The updated terms shift more legal responsibility for AI-generated outputs onto users, reducing Anthropic’s own liability.reddit

  • Stronger Surveillance Language: The terms now state flagged content may be used for “AI research” and “advance AI safety research,” implying deeper monitoring of conversations.reddit

  • The company commits to using filtering tools to exclude sensitive data from training, states data won’t be shared with third parties, and clarifies business, educational, and API accounts are unaffected.gigazine+2

How to Respond or Opt Out

  • Users can opt out via a popup or by toggling privacy settings in their Claude account before September 28, 2025; those who don’t opt out will have their data retained and used for training.anthropic+2
