Another SosyalKafa video: Interview about the Türkiye’s first AI Influencer, Seren Ay

We have recently interviewed Furkan Şahin, who is one of the team members who created Seren Ay.

  • Seren Ay (AI Influencer): Under the account “@ai.serenay” on Instagram, this refers to Turkey’s first and only AI influencer. The account produces content featuring a virtual persona generated by artificial intelligence, aimed at engaging with influencer and social media culture. The persona is often discussed regarding its AI authenticity and technological underpinnings, appearing as an innovative experiment in digital identity and influencer culture in Turkey.

Here are the highlights from the interview in English:

1. The Genesis of Serenay

  • Serenay was initially created to serve an e-commerce brand as an alternative to working with human influencers [02:16].
  • The original plan was to create a 2D animated character, but a global trend of AI influencers inspired them to create Serenay [05:06].
  • The team consists of four members, with a creator named Berat being instrumental in Serenay’s physical design [04:35].
  • The creators decided on an AI influencer due to the high cost of real influencers and a desire to control the brand image [07:05].

2. Serenay’s Journey and Success

  • Serenay quickly surpassed the e-commerce site she was created for, becoming a prominent influencer in her own right [02:26].
  • A key to her success has been maintaining character consistency, which was a challenge in the early days of AI image generation [05:55].
  • The team focuses on creating content that aligns with current social media trends rather than just promoting products [06:17].
  • Serenay’s popularity is fueled by her aspirational lifestyle, with her activities shared on Instagram Stories [17:44].

3. Character and Persona

  • Serenay is portrayed as being around 22-23 years old, but her age and appearance can be altered for different content [13:19].
  • Her signature red hair was chosen by two team members, not Furkan, who had preferred blue hair [13:09].
  • The team intentionally avoids giving Serenay a fixed persona or detailed backstory to keep her flexible and relatable [16:29].
  • Serenay’s “life” is spontaneous and reactive to current events, such as attending a Jennifer Lopez concert, which helps her stay relevant [17:25].

4. Business and Collaborations

  • Serenay participated in a global AI beauty pageant called Miss AI, where she placed in the top ten, leading to a partnership with a UK-based agency [09:24].
  • The team is selective about collaborations, prioritizing brands that align with Serenay’s image and provide opportunities for unique storytelling [32:49].
  • Furkan states that they are not focused on generating as many collaborations as possible but rather on building Serenay’s brand as an “icon” [33:13].

5. Audience and Reception

  • About 50% of direct messages (DMs) sent to Serenay’s account are from people who believe she is a real person [20:49].
  • The younger generation, particularly those aged 16-17, are more accepting of Serenay as an AI influencer and engage with her as they would with a human one [21:25].
  • The team avoids responding to DMs to maintain the character’s mysterious appeal and manages all communications manually [20:56].

6. Future Outlook

  • The team plans to expand Serenay’s presence beyond Instagram to other platforms like TikTok [22:15].
  • They aim to have Serenay become one of Turkey’s top influencers within three years, reaching a status comparable to well-known personalities [39:36].
  • Future projects include a potential English-language podcast about the technical aspects of creating Serenay [43:06].
  • They also hope to collaborate with brands on merchandise and other products once Serenay is firmly established as an icon [43:45].

7. Ethical Considerations

  • Furkan expresses discomfort with the use of AI to create visuals of deceased public figures like Atatürk or Barış Manço, highlighting the need for more ethical guidelines and legal regulations [44:50].
  • He emphasizes that while a degree of resemblance is acceptable, creating a perfect, lifelike replica of a deceased person is disrespectful [45:00].
  • The discussion notes that while technology is advancing rapidly, legal frameworks are struggling to keep up, leading to a need for self-regulation and ethical standards within the creator community [48:08].
