Hamdi Ulukaya of Chobani’s Fenerbahçe Sponsorship Sparks a Nationalist Uproar

As far as I know, the core idea against Mr. Ulukaya is that he appeared right in the middle of the government’s Kurdish peace process to give support to the process in some way. Whatever the real political motivations, businessmen from Turkey who got rich in the US tend to show off back in Turkey- I have only one person in mind in the past, my sample is small and unscientific, but strong (!). Chobani is not even sold in Turkey, but why not, right?

  • Founder’s Kurdish Background & Political Statements: Hamdi Ulukaya has been public about his Kurdish identity and his advocacy for Kurdish rights. Past statements about human rights violations against Kurds in Turkey, including references to village evacuations and discrimination, have resurfaced in Turkish media and social networks, fueling accusations among certain nationalist and far-right fans that he is sympathetic to groups considered controversial in Turkey123.

  • Name Association and Symbolism:

    • Some critics allege the name “Chobani” resembles “Kobani,” a Syrian Kurdish town that became a symbol of resistance against ISIS but is also politically sensitive due to its associations with Kurdish militancy in the region.

    • The product is often marketed in the U.S. and Europe as “Greek yogurt” rather than Turkish or strained yogurt, prompting a sense of cultural loss or insult among nationalists24.

  • Nationalist & Identity-Based Backlash: Social media backlash, especially from ultra-nationalist and some organized fan groups (like the “12 Numara” group), includes accusations that Ulukaya and Chobani are “terror supporters” or disloyal to Turkey, and calls for the club to cancel the sponsorship. Slogans like “First homeland, then Fenerbahçe” and direct rejection of “a brand linked to terrorism” have gone viral. These sentiments are amplified by both Fenerbahçe fans and supporters from rival teams1243.

  • Semantic Sensitivities: At the sponsorship signing ceremony, Ulukaya’s use of the term “Türkiyeliler” (people of Turkey) instead of “Türk milleti” (Turkish nation) caused further outrage, as some fans interpreted this as a political statement diminishing Turkish national identity3.

  • Broader Political Climate: The controversy has also coincided with broader Turkish discussions on Kurdish peace initiatives and related political tensions. Some view the sponsorship as symbolic in this context, further fueling opposition13.

Why Others Support or Defend the Sponsorship?

  • Record-Setting Financial Deal: Supporters of the deal point to its historic value—Fenerbahçe stands to earn at least €120 million over ten years, the largest sponsorship deal in Turkish sports. This financial windfall is seen as a key step towards the club’s international ambitions and financial security5678.

  • Globalization and Vision: Club leadership, including president Ali Koç, frames the partnership as a transformative, global opportunity and praises Ulukaya’s long-term support for Fenerbahçe and Turkish sport5968.

  • Ulukaya’s Loyalty & Sentiment: Ulukaya himself has expressed deep personal loyalty to Fenerbahçe, referencing his childhood memories and desire to “walk with Fenerbahçe at every step,” aiming to reassure supporters that the partnership is about more than a name or money8.
