In Şirince, for a Journalism workshop

It is my first time to stop by Şirince, which has become a tourist attraction but also an intellectual haven thanks to Nesin Mathematics Village. Following the success of the village project, a new initiative has emerged: the Arkhe Project, which focuses on Humanities and Social Sciences. That’s where I am involved this week.

Şirince is so touristy that I am a bit overwhelmed. Plus, the hot weather and lack of ACs made our lives miserable, but the project is so vital that I couldn’t miss this opportunity to meet with really motivated students.

Inside the Mathematics Village

Sevan Nişanyan was critical in Şirince’s rise to popularity. I have asked Perplexity to curate how he contributed:

‘s contributions to Şirince are both extensive and transformative, fundamentally reshaping the village’s identity, economy, and cultural significance.

  • Preservation and Restoration of Architecture: After moving to Şirince in 1995, Nişanyan began restoring old village houses in their traditional style. He spearheaded the creation of Nişanyan Evleri, a boutique hotel that opened in 1999, setting a precedent for architectural conservation and inspiring others to restore rather than demolish historical buildings127.

  • : By restoring and repurposing these structures, Nişanyan helped turn Şirince into a prominent tourist destination. This brought new economic vitality to the village, increasing visitor numbers and supporting the local economy through hospitality, crafts, and agriculture57.

  • Cultural and Educational Projects: Nişanyan played a key role in the establishment of the Nesin Mathematics Village, collaborating with Ali Nesin. This educational and research center, located just outside Şirince, has become internationally recognized and attracts students and scholars from around the world1.

  • : Through his writings and public advocacy, Nişanyan highlighted the historical and cultural value of Şirince, raising awareness both in Turkey and abroad. His efforts included publishing books about the village’s history and his experiences with local bureaucracy and preservation challenges34.

  • : Nişanyan was responsible for the construction of unique structures in and around Şirince, such as the stone tower and a rock-cut tomb, both of which have become local landmarks1.

  • Facing Legal and Bureaucratic Challenges: His work was often met with resistance from authorities, leading to numerous legal battles and even prison sentences for building in protected areas or continuing construction despite official bans. Despite these challenges, Nişanyan’s persistence brought national attention to issues of heritage preservation and rural revitalization14.

In summary, Sevan Nişanyan’s influence on Şirince is seen in its preserved architecture, thriving tourism, increased cultural profile, and the establishment of educational institutions like the Mathematics Village. His vision and determination transformed Şirince from a neglected rural village into a celebrated example of heritage-driven development1257.
