Ceasefire is good, both sides are losers?

I am glad that there is a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah. I am not sure about the details. Israel could not succeed in destroying Hezbollah; the latter will continue to exist. However, the organization lost nearly all its leadership and got humiliating blows. Still, it kept attacking Israeli cities, causing military and economic damage. In the meantime, if the ceasefire means no military support for Hamas in Gaza, this will be a more significant defeat for Hezbollah (and Iran)!

Overview of the Ceasefire Agreement

  • Date of Implementation: The ceasefire officially took effect at 4 AM local time on November 27, 2024 (02:00 GMT) after being announced by U.S. President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron[1][2].
  • Duration: The agreement includes a 60-day suspension of hostilities, during which both parties are expected to withdraw their military forces from the border region. This period is seen as a preliminary step towards a more permanent peace[1][3].

Key Terms of the Agreement

  • Withdrawal of Forces:
  • Hezbollah: The group is expected to pull its fighters back approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the Israeli border, specifically to the Litani River[1][2][5].
  • Israel: Israeli forces will gradually withdraw from southern Lebanon over the same 60-day period, allowing Lebanese security forces to take control of the area[2][4].

  • Role of Lebanese Army and UN Peacekeepers: The Lebanese Army will collaborate with United Nations peacekeeping troops to monitor the situation and ensure compliance with the ceasefire terms. This includes overseeing Hezbollah’s movements south of the Litani River to prevent any regrouping of militants[1][3][5].

Context and Reactions

  • Background: This ceasefire comes after a year marked by intense cross-border conflicts, resulting in approximately 3,800 fatalities in Lebanon and significant displacement among civilians. The fighting escalated dramatically in September 2024 when Hezbollah began launching rockets into Israel in support of Hamas amid ongoing tensions in Gaza[2][5].

  • International Support: The ceasefire has been facilitated by diplomatic efforts from the United States and France, with both nations pledging to help enforce the agreement. President Biden described it as an essential step toward restoring peace and stability in the region[1][2].

  • Local Reactions:

  • In Lebanon, there is cautious optimism as many residents begin returning to their homes, although some remain wary due to past conflicts and ongoing threats[2][4].
  • Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed gratitude for U.S. support but emphasized that Israel would maintain its right to respond militarily to any violations of the ceasefire[2][5].

Future Implications

While this ceasefire represents a hopeful turn towards stability, concerns remain about its durability. Both sides have expressed their intentions to uphold the agreement, yet historical precedents suggest that violations could easily reignite hostilities. The effectiveness of this ceasefire will largely depend on enforcement mechanisms and the political will of both parties involved[1][3].

How might the ceasefire affect Hezbollah’s ability to support Palestinian groups

1. Ceasefire Terms and Military Withdrawal

  • Under the ceasefire agreement, Hezbollah is required to withdraw its forces approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the Israeli border, effectively reducing its military presence in southern Lebanon. This withdrawal limits Hezbollah’s operational capacity to engage directly with Israel on behalf of Palestinian groups in Gaza[1][6].

2. Psychological Impact on Palestinian Resistance

  • The ceasefire may create a perception among Palestinians that they are now more isolated in their struggle against Israel. Analysts suggest that this could lead to a sense of abandonment, as Hezbollah’s military support is curtailed, leaving Hamas to fight largely on its own. This isolation could weaken Hamas’s position and morale, as they had hoped for greater regional solidarity following their attacks on Israel[1][2][5].

3. Shifts in Regional Dynamics

  • With Hezbollah’s military focus diverted due to the ceasefire, the pressure on Hamas may increase. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated that the ceasefire would allow Israel to concentrate its military efforts fully on Gaza, potentially intensifying operations against Hamas without the distraction of a northern front with Hezbollah[4][5]. This shift could diminish any leverage Hamas might have had through its alliance with Hezbollah.

4. Impact on Hamas Popularity

  • The ceasefire could also affect Hamas’s popularity among Palestinians. Analysts warn that if Hamas fails to deliver significant results or support from other militant groups like Hezbollah, it may face backlash from the public for its strategy and effectiveness in resisting Israeli actions[1][2]. The perception that their allies are unable or unwilling to assist could lead to a decline in support for Hamas.

5. Future Support and Solidarity

  • Although Hezbollah has historically supported Palestinian causes, the current situation may force them to recalibrate their involvement based on domestic pressures and the need to maintain stability within Lebanon. As Hezbollah focuses on rebuilding and consolidating its position post-conflict, its ability to offer substantial support to Palestinian groups may be limited for the foreseeable future[3][4].

In summary, while the ceasefire does not outright prevent Hezbollah from supporting Palestinian groups like Hamas, it significantly constrains their ability to do so effectively. The withdrawal of forces and the shift in focus towards internal stability within Lebanon may lead to a more isolated and vulnerable position for Palestinian militants in Gaza.
