Macron’s choice- another blow to trust in liberal democracies

Macron decided to ignore the winner in the last election. I am not sure if the victorious leftist bloc would do better but they deserved it…

Several key factors behind President Emmanuel Macron’s decision to appoint Michel Barnier as prime minister, despite the leftist New Popular Front (NFP) alliance winning the most seats in the recent snap election:

  1. Hung Parliament: The election resulted in a hung parliament, with no single party or alliance securing an outright majority[1][4]. This gave Macron some flexibility in choosing a prime minister.
  2. Constitutional Powers: While it’s customary for the president to call on the largest parliamentary group to form a government, the French constitution does not obligate Macron to do so[4].

  3. Political Strategy: Macron appears to be seeking a coalition of “mainstream” or “republican” parties, excluding both the far-right and far-left[1]. This strategy aims to create a governing majority that aligns more closely with his centrist policies.

  4. Ideological Differences: There are significant policy disagreements between Macron’s centrist agenda and the left-wing alliance’s platform, making cooperation difficult[3].

  5. Right-wing Support: By appointing Barnier, a center-right politician, Macron may be hoping to gain support from conservative MPs to form a working majority in parliament[4].

  6. Avoiding Left-wing Reforms: Macron seems reluctant to implement the NFP’s proposed reforms, which include reversing pension reforms and raising the minimum wage[6].

This decision has sparked significant controversy and protests across France:

  1. Democratic Concerns: Many view Macron’s choice as ignoring the will of the voters, with 74% of French citizens feeling Macron disregarded the election results[8].
  • Protests: Thousands of demonstrators have taken to the streets to protest Barnier’s appointment, with leftist groups accusing Macron of undermining democracy[8][9].

  • Political Instability: The appointment has deepened the political crisis in France, with the possibility of a no-confidence vote when parliament reconvenes[6][7].

  • Resistance Movement: Left-wing parties and trade unions are organizing resistance, calling for demonstrations and potential strikes[6][7].

  • In essence, Macron’s decision appears to prioritize maintaining his political agenda and forming a workable government over strictly adhering to the election results, a move that has intensified political tensions in France.
