It is the 22nd of June 2013. While reporting on protests in Ankara, Turkey my cameraman and I are shot by a police water cannon. With my back to the police vehicle and the light on our camera on I do not believe the police could not have seen we were media doing our job. Protests have by this point been ongoing for three weeks in cities across Turkey having started in defence of Gezi park in Istanbul, which was to be redeveloped. Protesters acuse Prime Minsiter Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his ruling AK party of authoritarianism and the police of brutality. Erdogan says there are violent hooligans among the ranks of protesters and says that he has sizeable support among Turks.
