Recently the Turkish media was all abuzz about the Demiroren AVM, which you may know better as ?the giant building under construction on Istiklal that?s been hidden from view for a few years.? Everyone finally found out why the building itself had been obscured behind fabric for much of the retrofitting process ? it?s significantly taller than their original plans stated, and than the original government board gave permission for. How were they able to do that? Well, audacity, political connections, and wealth, of course. But they also were able to take advantage of something that has sneakily become a bit of a hallmark of this administration: the replacement of the old board with an entirely new one that conveniently gave permission for all the changes the company wanted to make.
