What to do on the hottest day in Istanbul?

I stopped complaining about the hot and humid summer days of İstanbul.

I am, of course, thankful that I did not need to go out. I mean not out of the office.

Tomorrow I will have to attend a funeral. So I will be out, but on this super hot day, I stayed indoors.

Undeterred by the weather, I finished working on call for papers for two separate edited book projects inspired by our doctoral seminars. This is the most significant achievement of today! I have one more task to complete before the day ends: working on a social science dictionary entry on algorithms.

Drinking coffee

Getting slightly angry with myself for not storing enough snacks.

In several reading breaks, I continued my usual readings (if you want to see what I currently read, you can always look at my Goodreads profile) Today’s readings included pieces from The Routledge Companion to Media Anthropology , Theodor Fontane: Literature and History in the Bismarck Reich ,Data Cartels: The Companies That Control and Monopolize Our Information , Applied Anthropology: Unexpected Spaces, Topics and Method,  The Arabs and Islam in Late Antiqiuity: A Critique of Approaches to Arabic Sources

Drinking water and more coffee.

In the late afternoon, I got a headache and consumed my favorite Arveles painkiller.

I asked a doctoral student to sit in my office and work on her thesis progress report. She was complaining about not being able to focus, so I ordered her to sit down and write for an hour. It was a success. We will repeat it on Friday. I believe that in three sessions, she will be able to complete the report.

This is a ChatGPT creation! I could not make me smile without showing all of my teeth.

I gossiped as much as possible.

And several phone calls.

Meeting with new undergraduate student candidates. It is the time of year when parents and prospective students visit to explore the campuses.

In the background, I am exploring Dark Jazz (Bohren & der Club of Gore, The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble). These wore me down, so I switched to Zenith (Bleed from Within) to compensate.

In another break, I watched a fragment from Still Life (2006)

I have not looked at any news so far. I will have to check out my Feedly feed soon.

I will have to take time to do lessons on German, French, and Arabic in Duolingo. I haven’t done the daily routine yet.

I will go home soon and play CIV 7 all night  while watching Valley of the Wolves with Sinem. But of course, before the game, I have to work on that entry; otherwise, I will be grumpy….

Update: Sinem was sick, so we could not watch much. However, I played and didn’t want to do anything else except read a little bit more. I slept grumpily.
