A book chapter I co-authored: “Automated Journalism in Turkish Media Before the Rise of Generative AI”

Sena and I produced a piece we had worked on before into publishable material. It portrays AI in newsrooms just before the rise of Generative AI.

Here is the abstract for Azimli, S. O., & Saka, E. (2024). Automated Journalism in Turkish Media Before the Rise of Generative AI. In Revolutionizing Communication: The Role of Artificial Intelligence. CRC Press.

This chapter examines the adoption and implications of automated journalism in Turkish media before the widespread emergence of generative AI. Through interviews with journalists from major Turkish news organizations and analysis of current practices, the study reveals a complex landscape where automated tools are gradually being integrated into newsrooms, albeit with significant technological, economic, and cultural constraints. The research finds that while Turkish journalists recognize the potential benefits of automated journalism—including increased efficiency, cost reduction, and improved data processing capabilities—there remains considerable skepticism about AI’s ability to replicate core journalistic functions requiring human judgment, creativity, and emotional intelligence. The study highlights unique challenges facing Turkish media organizations, including limited access to public data, financial constraints due to currency instability, and the broader context of media ownership concentration. Additionally, the research explores how recent developments in generative AI are reshaping perspectives on automation in Turkish newsrooms, while emphasizing the continued importance of human oversight in maintaining journalistic integrity. The findings contribute to our understanding of how automated journalism technologies are being adapted within non-Western media contexts and suggest that successful integration of AI in journalism requires careful consideration of local cultural, economic, and professional factors.
