A new Kurdish peace process is on the way. MHP (Nationalist Movement Party) leader Devlet Bahçeli made some significant statements about PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan during his party’s group meeting today. Here are the key points:
- Bahçeli called for Öcalan’s isolation conditions to be lifted, suggesting that Öcalan could speak in the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM)[1][4].
He specifically said, “If the isolation of the terrorist leader is lifted, let him come and speak at the DEM Party group meeting and declare that terrorism has ended and the organization has been dissolved”[4].
Bahçeli stated that if Öcalan shows this resolve and determination, the way could be opened for legal arrangements regarding the use of the “Right to Hope” (Umut Hakkı) and for Öcalan to benefit from it[1][4].
He emphasized that they are ready to make any sacrifice for Turkey and the Turkish nation in this regard[4].
Bahçeli also mentioned, “Neither Kandil nor Edirne; let the address extend from İmralı to DEM, and let the terrorism issue be completely removed from the country’s agenda. We are up for this challenge”[4].
The MHP leader clarified that Turkey doesn’t need a new resolution process but rather needs to strengthen the thousand-year-old brotherhood[4].
These statements have sparked discussions about a potential new approach to the Kurdish issue and the PKK conflict, with Bahçeli seemingly opening the door for Öcalan to play a role in ending the terrorist activities of the PKK.
