My opening speech at Wikimedia CEE Meeting 2024

I was honored to be part of the opening speeches at Wikimedia CEE Meeting 2024. The meeting started today.

Wikimedia CEE Meeting 2024 (#WMCEE) is an annual conference centered on Wikimedia projects (Wikipedia and other related projects) in countries of Central and Eastern Europe (more recently, also in Central Asia). It features presentations on Wikimedia projects, other wikis, free/open source software, free knowledge and free content, and these topics’ social and technical aspects. The 2024 meeting will take place in Istanbul, Türkiye, in the period 20-22 September, organized by Wikimedia Community UG Türkiye.

This is my heartfelt speech to Wikipedians:

Good morning, everyone,

It is a great pleasure to welcome you all to the Wikimedia CEE Meeting 2024 here in Istanbul, a cosmopolitan city—a fitting setting for a gathering that unites a diverse community of volunteers, enthusiasts, and visionaries dedicated to free knowledge.

The Utopian Internet: Wikipedia’s Role

What I deeply admire about Wikipedia—and what draws so many of us to this project—is that it embodies all the utopian ideals that the early internet promised. Wikipedia is not just an encyclopedia; it is a living example of what the internet can be at its best: open, collaborative, and free. It is an open-access platform where information is available to everyone without barriers and where the data we build is open for others to use, reuse, and remix. Wikipedia demonstrates the true potential of participatory culture, where knowledge is built by users for users, reflecting the diverse voices and experiences of our global community.

Fighting the Ills of the Internet

However, Wikipedia’s value goes beyond access and openness. It actively fights against some of the most pressing challenges facing the internet today. Trolls, misinformation, and vandalism are ever-present threats, but our community has developed robust governance structures and protocols to counter these challenges effectively. Through dedicated editors and community guidelines, we see Wikipedia not just as a knowledge repository but as a battleground where we defend the principles of truth and accuracy every day.

Best Practices in Platform Governance

Wikipedia’s approach to platform governance is truly remarkable. It shows how a community-driven model can effectively balance openness with accountability. Our methods of collaborative editing, transparency, and consensus-building offer a blueprint for other online platforms struggling with governance issues. From content verification to conflict resolution, Wikipedia exemplifies how to create and maintain a space where truth prevails, and where the public is both the creator and the curator of information.

A Model of Financial Freedom

Even in today’s digital landscape, dominated by advertising and commercial interests, Wikipedia stands firm in its commitment to remain ad-free, supported by the generous contributions of its community. This financial independence allows Wikipedia to prioritize the quality and neutrality of information over profit, setting a powerful example for other platforms on how to operate sustainably without compromising integrity.

A Foundation for AI

Furthermore, as we move into an era increasingly defined by artificial intelligence, Wikipedia’s role becomes even more critical. It serves as a foundational resource for AI models that rely on accurate, verified data. By upholding rigorous standards for information, we ensure that AI tools are trained on a reliable base, helping to mitigate the spread of misinformation in our increasingly automated world.

Closing Thoughts

In conclusion, Wikipedia is not just an encyclopedia; it is a symbol of what the internet can be: a place where everyone has the power to contribute, learn, and grow together. It embodies the best of open access, community governance, and collective responsibility. As we gather here to share insights, experiences, and new ideas, let us remember that our work goes beyond editing pages—it’s about shaping the future of knowledge for generations to come.

Thank you all for being part of this journey. Let’s continue to make Wikipedia, and all Wikimedia projects, a beacon of hope, truth, and collaboration in the digital age.

Enjoy the conference, and I look forward to the inspiring discussions ahead.

Thank you.

Additional points:

  1. Community Diversity and Inclusion: Emphasize Wikipedia’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, highlighting how it actively works to represent voices from underrepresented regions and groups. This aligns well with the CEE Meeting’s focus on Central and Eastern Europe, and Central Asia, showcasing how Wikipedia bridges different cultures and languages.
  2. Adaptability and Evolution: You might touch upon Wikipedia’s adaptability in response to technological advancements and evolving community needs. This would underscore how Wikipedia continually refines its governance and editorial practices, keeping pace with changes in the internet landscape.
  3. Educational Impact: Mention Wikipedia’s role as an educational tool used by students, educators, and the general public. This would highlight Wikipedia’s broader impact beyond the platform itself, reinforcing its value in promoting lifelong learning and critical thinking.
  4. Recognition of Volunteers: Acknowledging the volunteers who dedicate their time and expertise to maintaining Wikipedia’s standards could add a personal touch. This appreciation would resonate well with your audience, who are part of that dedicated community.

Invitation for Participation and Growth: Encourage new participants to get involved, contribute, and become part of the governance model. This call to action can help further engage your audience and reinforce the collaborative nature of Wikipedia.
