Last week I was in Eskişehir attending the 5th New Media Studies Conference. The conference is organized by an association, Alternatif Bilişim Derneği. I have been a member from the outset. The association, which is not too active nowadays, was a pioneer in internet freedom causes and now organizes biannual conferences and publishes ebooks with no DRM. As the universities became more interventionist in terms of academic freedoms, the association decided to organize the biannual conference without the support of the university system. I can assuredly state that this conference is one of the intellectually most stimulating ones in Turkey. I am proud to be part of this.
While we were in Eskişehir, we have visited their legendary mayor, Yılmaz Büyükerşen (L2) with our emeritus professor Haluk Şahin (R2). Sinem also accompanied us.
