Our ongoing work on AI Literacy

Since last summer, I have been directing a project on AI Literacy. Google Turkey sponsors the project. However, I and my colleagues are the sole creators of the project content. So far, we haven’t had a public event, but one will take place on 5 December at İstanbul Bilgi University.

The Artificial Intelligence Literacy project is a project that has emerged as productive artificial intelligence tools have become a part of our daily lives. The aim of the project, which we are conducting with the support of Google, is to strengthen productive AI literacy, to reach out to different segments of the society, to encourage academics to contribute to the literature on AI and to support efforts to disseminate accurate information in Turkey. There is no doubt that AI will impact every aspect of human life. However, in parallel with the areas of expertise of the project components, its impact in three main areas will stand out in this literacy project:

1- Information verification and Artificial Intelligence in the context of the prevalence of disinformation;

2- The ways in which academia encounters AI

3- Exchanges with policy makers on building and using AI in an ethical and responsible manner, defined as “Responsible AI”.

In the context of these three topics, the project aims to provide individuals with a basic understanding of artificial intelligence (AI) and to improve their ability to understand, use and ethically evaluate AI systems. AI literacy helps individuals to understand and effectively use the AI technologies they encounter in everyday life, while also enabling them to assess the potential impacts and risks of AI.

Apart from our reports on these three topics, the outputs of our project will include mapping AI actors in Turkey, an AI dictionary, and the preparation of guidance videos, especially on Google Bard.

More to come on the next weeks!
