The Biden administration on Saturday made its first statements on Turkey concerning two high profile prisoners in the country.
The U.S. State Department, in an email statement to Ahval, commented on imprisoned Kurdish politician and former leader of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), Selahattin Demirtaş, as well as jailed philanthropist Osman Kavala, whose acquittal in the Gezi Park case was reversed on Friday.

The US will look at whether more sanctions against Turkey are needed, Blinken said one day before Biden’s inauguration.
“We ask Turkey to follow the ECtHR orders to immediately release Demirtaş and Kavala, as well as all other political prisoners, including Cihan Erdal,” says Lagodinsky, the Chair of the EU-Turkey delegation of the European Parliament.
Approving the resolution on the human rights situation in Turkey, notably the case of Selahattin Demirtaş and other prisoners of conscience, MEPs call on the country to follow the ECtHR orders to immediately release Demirtaş without any conditions.
The Turkish and French presidents exchange letters in which they agree to resume talks aimed at mending ties.
