A few weeks ago, I have attended a class trip- a fieldwork experiment in UC Irvine Anthropology – in Signal Hill, where is close to Los Angeles. Half an hour at most. I have never heard of Signal Hill before I arrived in Irvine. I have always imagined oil rigs out of urban contexts but Signal Hill is just in the middle of a large urban complex. It has passed its prime, but there is still oil coming up right in the middle of a gentrified neighborhood. There is a special aesthetics surrounding this district.
