AKP spokesperson just Hüseyin Çelik declared that the AKP convention to choose the new PM will be on Aug 27,  a day before Gül’s retirement from the Presidency… This decision is apparently to prevent Gül’s return to party…

Recep Tayyip Erdogan will become Turkey’s next president, after declaring victory in the country’s first-ever direct presidential election Sunday.

Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has won the first direct presidential elections in Turkey. The results after almost all the ballots had been counted point to the former prime minister having achieved an absolute majority. Erdoğan owes his new success above all to the huge economic upswing of recent years, commentators believe, and fear that the conservative Islamic politician will rule with an even tighter fist.
