Deputies protesting the stripping of independent candidate Hatip Dicle?s deputyship by the Supreme Election Board, of YGS, were sprayed with tear gas by police in Istanbul on Sunday.
Supporters of Turkey’s Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) run for cover after riot police used tear gas and water cannon to disperse demonstrators during a protest against the election board in Istanbul June 26, 2011. The BDP, which won 36 seats in Turkey’s recent elections, said it would not attend parliament unless an elected deputy barred from parliament was allowed to take his seat. The boycott might force by-elections that could enable the newly re-elected government to reach the majority it covets to pass a new constitution. REUTERS/Murad Sezer
