Among the rich families of Turkey Eczacıbaşı family is exceptional. No other families can challenge Eczacıbaşı in the amount of investment in arts and cultural fields. But not only in terms of investment, this family is exceptionally urban, modern and politically liberal in their reactions and positionings. One of their leading members, Şakir Eczacıbaşı, passed away today. May he rest in peace.
But 24 January seems to be a not good day for Turkey since three major personalities also died this day in Turkey as a Hürriyet news highlights:
Today is the 17th anniversary of Uğur Mumcu assassination: Turkey remembers Uğur Mumcu on 17th year of his death
His murderers are very probably related to Ergenekon gang. However, many Mumcu fans are sceptical of Ergenekon trial. Another irony of Turkish politics.
A successful police chief Gaffar Okkan, who was behind Turkish Hizbullah operations, was assassinated in 2001.
And İsmail Cem passed away due to cancer again this day three years ago. He was one of the rarely found sincere and urbane Turkish politicians…
