Why did he win?

The question seems to be on many lips: why did President Obama win the Nobel Peace Prize just nine months into his presidency? “What achievement is this about?” some ask. The nominations closed only two weeks after he came to power. “What had he done by then?” people ask.

Saying he was ?humbled? by the honour, which was bestowed upon him in part because of his role in meeting the challenges of global climate change, in part – in the words of the Nobel Committee – ?for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples?, Obama considers the award a ?call to action?. A big thank for the Nobel Committee – they have just made our day today. The president’s press secretary woke Mr Obama at six o’ clock in the morning eastern time to tell him that he had won the Nobel Peace Prize. I don’t yet know the president’s immediate reaction but the official one is that he is “humbled”. Apparently when a senior TV correspondent broke the news to a couple of very senior aides even earlier, they thought it was a wind-up.

  1. What has Obama done? It’s like winning an Olympic Medal because I might be able to jump high in 3 years.
Maybe he’ll also win an Oscar for acting well the role of making promises. Not one fulfilled, yet. We’re waiting….
