Days before the foreign ministers of Armenia and Turkey are due to sign two historic protocols establishing diplomatic relations and possibly opening the border between the two neighboring countries, media attention has spiked towards what many had previously thought was an unlikely development.

Two leading politicians of Turkish origin, meanwhile, were not elected. Lale Akgün of the SDP, who ran for a seat in the federal parliament for the third time, and Cem Özdemir, the co-leader of the Green Party. Of the roughly 2.8 million people with Turkish roots, only about 600,000 can vote, many failing to register or acquire citizenship. Before these elections, five lawmakers out of 614 in the Bundestag, the lower house of parliament, were of Turkish origin.
