Considering the developments beginning with Georgia’s attack on South Ossetia earlier this month, this latest move might not seem surprising. But in terms of the bigger picture, one can say that through its recognition Russia took a risky step in a thorny area."

La reacción informativa ante el veredicto del Tribunal Constitucional turco, que renunció a ilegalizar el partido del Gobierno, ha sido, en líneas generales, de desconcierto. Muchos analistas occidentales han supuesto que el país y sus actores políticos no han cambiado en los últimos 20 años y que no solo se produciría la mencionada ilegalización, sino que incluso cabría la posibilidad de un golpe de Estado militar. Pero los países se transforman a lo largo del tiempo, porque lo hacen sus sociedades, sus economías, sus circunstancias internacionales. Incluso las grandes potencias actúan de forma diferente y cambian sus objetivos. Así, un golpe militar turco hubiera resultado azaroso en sus resultados sin conocer quién mandará en la Casa Blanca y qué objetivos perseguirá en la zona el nuevo presidente norteamericano. Por otra parte, la Unión Europea presionó lo suyo para que el Tribunal Constitucional turco no llevara a cabo la ilegalización del partido en el Gobierno.

Además, es muy probable que la discreta mediación de la UE haya sido el mejor bálsamo para tranquilizar los ánimos e incluso para recuperar la confianza en el maltrecho proceso de integración europea en los Balcanes y Anatolia.
