European Parliament Takes On Blogs (Symbolically)

By nanne

The 22nd of September is probably a date to put in your Calendar, as the European Parliament will vote on an 'own initiative report' from Estonian MEP Marianne Mikko on (among other things)... blogs.

Are blogs even a pan-European issue? Not quite, if you ask me. Most of the reading and blogging is done in a national discourse. There is little advertising by international companies across different blog markets. To get into discussing the few dozens of euroblogs is really too much. So, subsidiarity should apply.

Blogger arrests reach record high

By Alisa Zykova

Currently, blogging arrests are at a record high, the BBC reports. 64 bloggers have been detained from mostly China, Egypt and Iran since 2003 according to a University of Washington annual report. In 2006-2007, the number of arrested bloggers tripled to 36.

Blogging has a "political importance", since issues include exposure of corruption, human rights violations, "suppression of protests", criticism of public policies and questioning political entities. Arrests tend to multiply during times of "political uncertainty" such as during elections.

Bloggers to AP: You're Dead to Me

Last week the Associated Press began taking a very aggressive stance on the use of its content. They threatened the Drudge Retort with take-down notices over several items that contained very short 39 to 79 word quotes from its articles. Many bloggers slammed the AP's new tactics. Now, the New York Times reports that the AP is going to set guidelines about how its content can be used on the Internet later this week even though bloggers are following "fair use" rules when quoting AP stories....

So-called wiretapping incident reveals CHP partisanship in media

The fact that some media outlets blew out of proportion recent allegations by the Republican People's Party (CHP) that the telephone of its secretary-general was wiretapped by the state's secret service and the content of conversations disclosed to the Vakit daily -- allegations later on proven to be baseless -- showed the biased and partisan approach prevailing among some Turkish media outlets.

Description: The progressive group MoveOn wants to know how its members feel about the struggle between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton for the Democratic party nomination. Instead of using a tradition poll, they created a series of Facebook groups and asked members to vote by joining the group whose message they most agreed with, ranging from “wake me up when this primary is over” to “Obama: you won! time to focus on McCain” (see graphic above). MoveOn staff will track the number of members who join each group and from these numbers will be able to tell which views are most popular with their members.

How to study surveillance

By Ethan

Chris Conley leads one of the most difficult research projects we’ve undertaken at the Berkman Center - the surveillance study of the Open Net Initiative. Over the past five years, the good folks at ONI have gotten very smart about how the internet is filtered in nations around the world. What’s much less clear is how the internet is monitored and what governments, law enforcement agencies, corporations and others are able to track as far as online behavior.

One problem: if surveillance is performed competently, it should be undetectable. Second problem: it’s often to someone’s advantage to claim that surveillance is taking place, even when it’s not, as it can change behaviors. (Think about “dummy” cameras mounted on your house as part of a fake “security system”. If they’re convincing enough, perhaps they don’t actually need to work.) Conley mentions my comments about the panopticon effect of surveillance in a recent Newsweek article - I assert that Zimbabwe isn’t able effectively monitor the Internet… but by stating that they will, they’ve forced a large number of users to remove sensitive information and conversations from the Internet.

Academic “Social Network Sites”: Very Preliminary Impressions

By Maximilian Forte

I have recently registered in three social network sites that were discussed in the listserv of the Association of Internet Researchers (AoIR), the three being Pronetos, Academici, and LinkedIn, two of which are primarily for academics. My initial, admittedly superficial reaction was: “Web 2.0 is a good place to be lonely, if you’re an anthropologist”. In Pronetos, I am the only anthropologist, and in fact I had to create the anthropology discipline so that I could join it–and I reign in that kingdom in glorious solitude, talking to myself (as I am accustomed). In Academici, I cannot find other anthropologists, nor in LinkedIn where I cannot even find other academics, of any discipline, from my home institution (Concordia University, Montreal).
