Tired of hearing about Twitter? Apologies, but this post is based on the Twitter phenomenon. Issues of scalability, however, are thankfully not present. Instead, I want to examine Twitter as an anomaly in consumer loyalty and an example of the bizarre market dynamics emerging in the "consumer" web.
Structural Social Network Theory
It seems like successful social networks grow like weeds. Just look at how massive Facebook and MySpace have become. A good social network establishes the foundation for its users, then allows them to do their thing - with minimal interference. This plants the seed for organic growth. One user attracts another, who in turn attracts more. From here Metcalfe's Law kicks in: the value of a network is proportional to the square of the number of users of the system (n²). As a network adds users its value grows exponentially.

Akamai is out today with their first "State of the Internet" report. The report is well worth a read as it covers a variety of topics including: security, connection speeds, geography, network access, and Internet penetration. Some of the interesting stats include:
- China leads the world in attack traffic including denial of service attacks.
- Nearly 30% of attacks are to port 135 which is used for remote procedure calls on Microsoft operating systems.
- In March 2008, more than 10,000 Web pages on hundreds of Web sites were infected by hackers looking to steal passwords used in popular online games.
