Intelligentsia to government: You have no more excuses

A group of intelligentsia in Turkey has warned the government to keep its word on European Union accession reforms, daily Milliyet reported yesterday. “Elections and presidential are over. You accomplished your mission on your privileged issue of headscarf. Now you have no excuse not to embrace the EU project, which you have ignored for three years,” read the memorandum prepared by the group that includes academics, artists, and journalists. “Keep your word!” the memorandum demanded of the government....

The results of the Armenian elections last Tuesday were unfortunately not as hopeful as those experienced recently in Cyprus.

The former prime minister and new president Sarkisian is from the 'Karabakh family,' which holds power in Armenia in its hands like a caliphate. Sarkisian is, like Kocharian, a politician who supports the independence of Karabakh. His political star began to shine during his time in the Soviet Union Communist Party, and he held an important position during the occupation of Azeri lands. He has also held important positions such as defense minister during his career in Armenia."

Article 301 and relativity

By ESER KARAKAŞ, STAR

There have been many jokes made about the theory of relativity in timing with regards to the pull out of Turkish troops from northern Iraq, especially in the wake of the US secretary of defense’s visit to Ankara, with the revelation that even as officials were acknowledging that the pull out could happen anywhere from “a day later to a year later,” the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) were already in the midst of bringing troops back.

France, Turquie : perdants-perdants

Libération (France), 4 mars 2008, p. 37

Marc Bernardin

Yusuf Kanlı: Cyprus plane is taking off again

Late friend and colleague Kenneth McHenzie, who was covering Turkish news for a variety of British newspapers in the 1970s and 1980s before settling in Cyprus, was often joking that Cyprus was like a plane which keeps on taking off once in a while but never lands. Take-offs, Ken was saying, have always been majestic, with grandiose expectations which somehow always preceded some sort of tension on the island, while the end of the process has always been a disaster, with either of the two sides finding a pretext of burying in the annals of history of failed Cyprus bids whatever achieved through lengthy discussions.Cyprus diplomacy, indeed, is very much like a ping-pong
