Gül’s visit heralds a new phase in US-Turkish relations

Turkish President Abdullah Gül’s visit to the White House, his first such visit to the US as president and the first visit by a Turkish president in 11 years, comes at a time when US-Turkish relations have taken a new turn.

Abdullah Gül’s US visit

Nowadays political leaders travel more than their predecessors and they even spend their holidays abroad. Thus, the role played by meetings between country leaders has grown.

Because ideological rivalry is staged via symbols in Turkey, words and concepts matter. Nobody is willing to be labeled a minority and the majority is reluctant to describe groups with this term.

The US-Turkish alliance and playground politics

Turkey’s president, Abdullah Gül, flew into Washington this week -- low enough to escape detection on the radar screens of the American media but with a cargo load of Turkish newspaper editors to ensure he received plenty of coverage back home.

The issues that will be discussed at the Bush-Gül meeting in Washington will most probably include combat against terrorism -- in practice, cooperation against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) presence in northern Iraq.

A new era in Turkish-American relations?

Are we really entering a new era in Turkish-American relations, which became bumpy when Parliament refused the US request to use Turkish territory prior to the Iraq conflict on March 1, 2003?

Another interesting point that needs to be underlined in the Gül-Bush meeting is that Turkey has sought support from the US for its EU bid following a protracted period of time.

How did our relations with the US change?

By ABDÜLHAMİT BİLİCİ, ZAMAN

When did the Unites States’ view of Turkey change? When I put this question to someone who follows the affairs in Washington closely, he drew attention to two points: the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) attack in Dağlıca was a turning point.

Political solution to end Kurdish problem questioned

Although unconfirmed or even harshly denied by President Abdullah Gül, a political solution to end Turkey’s decades-long Kurdish and outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) problem was reportedly one of the agenda items during Gül’s meeting with US President George W. Bush at the White House early this week.

Like a rooster with a 'cocky' attitude, legs are crossed, as if not to be outdone by the other in the superiority department. This must be the body language for the international politics these days. This cheesy tactic is especially used by the Western leaders when meeting their Middle Eastern counterparts. Arrogance that Mr.Gul finds himself having to respond to, especially after the critisizm Erdogan got for not crossing his legs when meeting Sarkozy not too long ago at the UN, where Sarkozy was about to slide off his chair.

It should be considered rude for servants of the people to cross their legs in a familial, nonchalant fashion, when they are talking to the media who are there representing the public and the public's need to know.
