Nearly two years after the internationally acclaimed author Orhan Pamuk narrowly escaped imprisonment for statements that were thought to "insult Turkishness", the publisher of a British writer goes on trial today accused of the same charge.

 In the mean time,

Publisher of minority newspaper "HXΩ", correspondent for MEGA Greek television channel and ESHEA member, Andreas Rombopoulos was attacked in Istanbul and seriously injured by two unknown people. Mr. Rombopoulos was recently featured in a film produced by the Greek embassy the well-known Turkish journalist Mehmet Ali Birand. The film was presented in a Greek-Turkish business relations meeting and Turkish journalist Ridvan Akar and Greek journalist Andreas Rombopoulos were in a friendly banter about the recent scores of football games between Greece and Turkey and expounding on the true source of baklava.....

A new daily, Taraf

Another "independent" newspaper appears in Turkish press. As far as I know it belongs to Alkım Yayınları, a relatively successful publisher.

Well, I and Çetin were not particularly impressed with the first days. Contentwise, Haluk Şahin seems to agree with us:) Its design looks like Birgün but still its paper and design is clear and impressive as Oray Eğin points out. But he is also not impressed and lists the "failures".

Freedom of press in Turkey faces obstacles despite improvement - Turkish Daily News Dec 06, 2007

New daily launched by seasoned journalists

A new newspaper, the brainchild of three of Turkey's most experienced journalists, was launched yesterday.

Taraf has its headquarters in İstanbul, representative offices in Ankara and foreign correspondents in Washington, Brussels and Jerusalem, and aims to offer a daily that is "reputable, smart and intelligent," according to its creators.

The leading figures at the new publication are veteran journalists Alev Ar, who has led many weekly publications as editor-in-chief over a long career; Yasemin Çongar, who was a foreign correspondent in Washington for Milliyet daily and news station CNN Türk until she quit to start her new job as the second editor-in-chief of Taraf; and Ahmet Altan, a novelist who wrote columns for Hürriyet.

Taraf also gathers together names such as Etyen Mahçupyan, editor-in-chief of bilingual Turkish-Armenian daily Agos, and Nese Düzel, a journalist renowned for her sensational interviews with academic and political figures. In the words of Altan, Taraf is taking the side of the people, the law, democracy, the civil forces and Parliament -- as opposed to the military bureaucracy -- unlike the Turkish media. "The media never told the people the truth. It did not stand against coups or other types of military intervention in politics. We are not rowing against this current; we want to change the direction in which it flows."

The newspaper sells for YTL 1, more expensive than the average newspaper to "ensure its independence." Taraf does not yet have a Web site.
