How Everything is Interconnected ...

Secretary Rice's trip to Turkey-and the likely reception she will receive--is the clearest signal to date that our attempts to "compartmentalize" the problems of the Middle East, to deal with each crisis and issue as if it could stand alone, is breaking down.

Some of the interconnections:

Rice Visit To Turkey

I don't have high expectations for the Secretary's visit to Ankara on Friday. What she seems prepared to offer--based on news reports--is better and more detailed intelligence on the PKK and its activities in Iraq. MİLLİYET Interesting timing of Kanal 7 television: Islamist-oriented Turkish television channel Kanal 7 broadcasted a series about Mustafa İsmet İnönü, the Republic's second president, on Oct. 29 Republic Day. The series received strong criticism by the audience because it portrayed the gendarmerie as being against people praying, reported the daily Milliyet. The series “Demir Leblebi” (an expression in Turkish which literally means “iron chickpeas” and is used figuratively for people who are not easy to cope with) is about the Mustafa İsmet İnönü era. During the film the prayer calls are recited in Turkish and the gendarmerie are portrayed to be against the people.....

Akşam Sea transport may be a solution to traffic mess: The total time spent in Istanbul traffic has increased by 10 minutes compared to last year and 18,200 vehicles are being added to the city's traffic each month, the daily Akşam reported yesterday. It was reported that the reason behind this is that 93 percent of Istanbul residents prefer land transport, while sea transport comprises only 2.22 percent of transport activity. There have been no serious investments in sea transportation in Turkey since the 1950s and even though the boats were changed and the population increased, the number of boats and docks stayed the same, the daily quoted Tayfun Kahraman, the secretary genera...
