Armenian story has another side -- chicagotribune.com

"Armenian story has another side By Norman Stone, a historian and the author of 'World War I: A Short History' October 16, 2007

All the world knows what the end of an empire looks like: hundreds of thousands of people fleeing down dusty paths, taking what was left of their possessions; crammed refugee trains puffing their way across arid plains; and many, many people dying. For the Ottoman Empire that process began in the Balkans, the Crimea and the Caucasus as Russia and her satellites expanded. Seven million people -- we would now call them Turks -- had to settle in Anatolia, the territory of modern Turkey."

Taner Akcam weighs in on the Genocide bill before Congress

"(...) For his part, "A Shameful Act" author Taner Akcam acknowledges the force of these pragmatic arguments -- but rejects them.

"Look, we can make a list of reasons why this resolution will make matters worse," Akcam said in a phone interview from his office at the University of Minnesota.

"First, it explicitly politicizes the problem. Second, it makes a historic problem a diplomatic fight between the United States and Turkey. Third, it increases the aggressive attacks of the Turkish government against those inside and outside the country. Fourth, it increases the animosity and hatred against Armenians generally in Turkey. Fifth, it can never solve the problem. It aggravates the problem.

[MONDAY TALK] ‘Israel likely to lose Turkey if Armenian resolution passes’

Expert on Turkish foreign policy Bülent Aras said Israel might be further isolated in the Middle East if abandoned by Turkey following a possible passage of the Armenian genocide resolution in the US Congress.

A pyrrhic victory

The frustration of Gunduz Aktan, former ambassador and current Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) member of Parliament said it all. Speaking at a Washington think tank, the day after the “yes” vote on the Armenian resolution at the US House Committee on Foreign Affairs, Aktan was upset for more than one reason.

Is the PKK trying to provoke a cross-border operation?

With the latest incident yesterday in Hakkari it has become crystal clear that the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) wants Turkey to wage a cross-border operation into northern Iraq.

Turkish-American relations

Relations between the United States and Turkey have witnessed several ups and downs throughout the course of history. Turkey has often considered the United States as a protector and as the one that balances other great powers’ ambitions over Turkey, helping to preserve Turkey’s independence.

Why is NATO’s Article 5 not enforced in favor of Turkey?

Any country could criticize the operation Turkey is considering carrying out against the terrorist organization based in Iraq that martyrs our soldiers everyday.

The motion and its consequences

Can the motion approved on Oct. 17 in Parliament, with 507 deputies voting for it, be an indicator of Turkey’s determination to assume a more active role in the Iraq incidents?

Just when the smoke from Turkey's domestic political conflicts of the past year had begun to clear, another deadly attack by Kurdish separatists on Turkish soldiers has the government threatening military attacks inside northern Iraq.

Why will tomorrow’s referendum be held? by MÜMTAZ’ER TÜRKÖNE

Tomorrow is the day of the referendum. The citizens of the Turkish Republic are anticipated to go to the ballot boxes and vote in favor or against a package consisting of a few articles and constitutional amendments.

Is 301 getting hotter?

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, along with President Abdullah Gül, has "personally" supported the demands to alter 301.

Armenian bill

The resolution pertaining to Armenian genocide claims has been losing support in the US House of Representatives. Even this is enough to prove that the resolution is not a principle but a medium utilized for political purposes.

The motion and the advocacy of the PKK

Unfortunately, common sense is replaced by anger when people go off the deep end.

Article 301 leaves no place for freedom

Imagine that one can say "there was no genocide" but cannot claim that genocide took place some time in Turkish history.

The passion of ‘cross-border’

The cross-border operation into northern Iraq seems to be tantamount to the “decency of Turkey” with the recent developments. Chief of General Staff Gen. Yaşar Büyükanıt and Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli stated that any opposition to the cross-border operation would be tantamount to high treason.

The solution offered by the motion!

The outlawed PKK is a consequence of the factor that triggered the Kurdish issue. Those who are aware of the Kurdish problem generally ask the same question:

The real problem is freedom of expression

The upcoming Turkey 2007 Progress Report, to be issued by the European Commission, puts pressure on the government to take urgent steps to amend Article 301.

The discourse captures both Turks and Kurds

We should realize that this country cannot wriggle through the existing atmosphere of chaos unless the style adopted by the politicians is changed as the expressions uttered by the political parties drag the country into a deadlock because the issues dominating the national agenda, such as terrorism, the Kurdish issue and the parliamentary authorization for a cross-border operation into northern Iraq, are bogged down due to the stance and style adopted by the politicians.

Should we be like the US?

Turkey is entitled to employ every kind of defensive measure against attacks coming from foreign territories.

Making history with a majority of votes

Congratulations to us! It seems we have managed to narrowly escape being designated “a country that committed genocide.”
