European Convention on Human Rights becomes basis for new constitution

The commission that is working on the new constitution will come together Thursday to put the final touches on the new constitution at a special session planned to take place either in the town of Kızılcahamam or Abant..

Basic rights and freedoms will be protected within the framework of the European Convention on Human Rights in the new constitution being drafted by the Justice and Development Party (AKP) and a group of academics.....


‘Civil constitution’ issue

A civil constitution, above all, requires civilians to have the initiative in its preparation and direction. Second, a constitution that is worthy of being called civil must foresee a system that is open to contributing to expanding civil rights.

Short constitution, long constitution

If I recall correctly, Turgut Özal was the first to say "We need a short constitution, not a detailed one." Noting that the American constitution is short, Özal had recommended that Turkey follow their example.

Civilian constitution

At the end of the day it is rather probable that we may have a text which we may find rather problematic and even perhaps "counter revolutionary" that did not conform at all with the fundamental principles of the secular democratic order established in this country by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and other forefathers of modern Turkish Republic.But, we may as well have a text which not only is in full conformity with the founding principles of the secular Turkish democracy but at the same time has successfully wrote off all those primitive and obsessive restrictions embedded in the soul and text of the 1982-military scissored Constitution and thus provided Turkey a golden opportunity of discovering...
