What is to be expected of President Gül?

The orchestrated campaign launched in April against Abdullah Gül has finally failed. The July elections, restoring democratic processes and principles, opened the way for the election of Gül as Turkey’s 11th president. Gül’s election in itself is a milestone for the consolidation of Turkish democracy and the normalization of Turkish politics.

Gül’s challenge

Abdullah Gül has been elected the 11th president of the Turkish Republic. Some analysts called his candidacy controversial and warned of a major backlash. All that is past now. A number of challenges lie ahead for Gül. The challenges, however, are not only for him but also for the future of Turkish democracy.
