Code-Dependent: Pros and Cons of the Algorithm Age

(filistimlyanin/iStock.com)Algorithms are instructions for solving a problem or completing a task. Recipes are algorithms, as are math equations. Computer code is algorithmic. The internet runs on algorithms and all online searching is accomplished through them. Email knows where to go thanks to algorithms. Smartphone apps are nothing but algorithms. Computer and video games are algorithmic storytelling. Online dating and book-recommendation and travel websites would not function without algorithms. GPS mapping systems get people from point A to point B via algorithms. Artificial intelligence (AI) is naught but algorithms. The material people see on social media is brought to them by algorithms. In fact, everything people see and do on the web is a product of algorithms. Every time someone sorts a column in a spreadsheet, algorithms are at play, and most financial transactions today are accomplished by algorithms. Algorithms help gadgets respond to voice commands, recognize faces, sort photos and build and drive cars. Hacking, cyberattacks and cryptographic code-breaking exploit algorithms. Self-learning and self-programming algorithms are now emerging, so it is possible that in the future algorithms will write many if not most algorithms.

Son of Stuxnet: “invisible,” memory-resident malware stalks the world’s banks

Duqu 2.0 is a strain of clever, nearly undetectable malware, derived from Stuxnet, that stays resident in its hosts’ memory without ever writing persistent files to the system’s drives.

Twitter Says It’s Trying Three Things to Combat Trolls

For starters, once you’ve been banned for abusive content, you won’t be allowed back.

The art (and commerce) of Minecraft

Since its initial release in 2009, Minecraft has matured to the point of being a platform for people who want to make art and also for people who want to make money. Phil Edwards of Vox highlights some of the beautiful structures being created by Minecraft players (some of which are collected in this coffee table book called Beautiful Minecraft) and the challenges faced by creators trying to make money within a game owned by a large company.

Thanks to advances and breakthroughs in hardware, software and artificial intelligence, eye tracking technology has progressed immensely in the past year, and is now drawing the attention of tech industry’s biggest players.

More than 600 million devices worldwide are now using ad-blockers

In the cat-and-mouse game that is ad-blocking, it seems the cat is losing. Last year, some 11 percent of all internet users globally used ad-blocking software to thwart digital advertising on their favorite websites.

When you think of the web, you often imagine people on the other end of a power button. Mobile phones, laptop computers, and large pipes bridge us with each of the corner globe, but humans aren’t all that the internet serves to connect. According to a new report, more than half of all internet traffic now comes from bots — software applications designed to do everything from posting Pro-Trump messages on Twitter to crawling the web to deliver better search results. Bots, these days, are capable of just about any repetitive online process humans are, and much like humans, they’re a mixed…
