You couldn’t move for new waves in the noughties: even Antarctica looked capable of knocking out its own film scene. But the Latin American buena onda in Mexico, Brazil and Argentina, the South Korea extreme-Asia offshoot and the Russian blockbuster boom all had one thing in common. They found it hard to sustain their initial impact, whether it was because the global media moved on to the next big thing, or their key directors were poached by Hollywood, or there was a lack of sustained investment. Gael García Bernal reflected on theMexican version of the problem at an NFT talk: “When we did Amores Perros, Mexico only made six films that year. There will be 65 films this year. But I don’t know how many of those will be seen. The point is not just making them but of them becoming reality, of becoming films that are shown in cinemas.”

Le photographe d?Uzak qui voulait rompre ses racines anatoliennes, était devenu incapable d?en photographier les paysages. Nuri Bilge Ceylan n?est pas atteint de cette infirmité. Dès les premières images d? « Il était une fois en Anatolie », on sent vibrer cette terre anatolienne, magique et familière à ceux qui la connaissent. Une terre savoureuse malgré le drame qui s?y joue, comme Naci bey, le commissaire auquel Yilmaz Erdogan donne toute son humanité : explosant en colère brutale quand il se sent humilié, puis capable d?élans d?immense générosité. Truculent aussi parfois. Mais j?avoue que dans la salle, j?étais la seule à qui il arrivait de rire. Je devais aussi être la seule à comprendre le turc et à saisir toute la saveur des propos échangés ( et dans une voiture qui roule dans la nuit, surtout anatolienne, on discute beaucoup).
Behzat Ç: Maverick TV detective makes screen debut
