Ahmet Şık and Nedim Şener arrested. An unfortunate turn of events in the Ergenekon Case.

It is very hard to believe that our colleague and friend Ahmet Şık is an Ergenekon member. He devoted his life to struggle for human rights issues in Turkey as a journalist and he was in Nokta magazine team whose publications started the Ergenekon case in the first place. Many people suspect his unabating anti-Gulenism may be the cause of his arrest. I was personally not buying much of his arguments but this must not be the consequence of his position. With these arrests, there come the end of an alliance for supporting Ergenekon case. Many Islamists and pro-Gulenists are feeding the suspicion that “how can we know? maybe he [Ahmet] was involved, maybe there is evidence we do not know” whereas liberals and left-liberals are totally frustrated with Ahmet’s arrest. It seems that a case with unthinkable democratic potentials for Turkey is turning into a protracted revenge game in politics…

The process of defying Ergenekon, Balyoz and similar shady deep state networks and junta organizations — which is crucial for Turkey to become a transparent, accountable and true democracy with the rule of law — took on a new dimension with the detention of 11 people, including many journalists, on Thursday. The journalists taken into custody include some well-known figures such as Nedim Şener of Milliyet daily, and Ahmet Şık, who published the infamous Coup Diaries in Nokta news magazine, which has led to confusion in the minds of certain groups.
