Anti-government circles and supporters of Ergenekon, a clandestine crime network which has alleged links within the state and is suspected of plotting to topple the government, are interpreting the arrest of Soner Yalçın, who runs the controversial odatv.com news portal, and two employees as a blow to freedom of the press.

The recent developments concerning the Sledgehammer (Balyoz) case have the potential to make an impact on the elections to be held in June. The legal process that is making progress with a series of arrests is a separate matter. As the political spectrum and the political competition among parties are shaped according to these debates, this case will certainly influence the election results.

Last week the US ambassador to Turkey created havoc when he directly commented on a legal case and declared that he was confused about freedom of the press in Turkey. The case in point concerns the infamous Ergenekon terrorist organization and journalist Soner Yalçın, who has been charged for being a member of the organization.

Many analysts say yet another electoral defeat is very likely for the CHP in June because the public never supports defenders of shadowy organizations and coups.

It seems that pro-Ergenekon/Sledgehammer media organizations and circles will never stop disseminating lies, distortions, disinformation and black propaganda in order to discredit the Ergenekon and Sledgehammer (Balyoz) cases which are critically important for the future of Turkey, a country with a recent past rife with military interventions and coups. Sometimes, they even go to such extremes and they put themselves such miserable situations that one is urged to say, ?No, this is really too much.?
