Turkey’s National Inquiry and Investigation Commission on Mavi Marmara Incident

from Mavi Boncuk by M.A.M

The imposition of a naval blockade has been considered a legal instrument of war for generations. The question of whether Israel and Hamas, which controls Gaza, are in a formal state of war is largely moot as both sides agree that they are. Also immaterial is the argument that the Israeli elite naval commando unit, the Shayetet, stopped the flotilla in international waters: America legally stopped in international water any ship attempting to violate its naval blockade of Cuba in the 1960s.

Mavi Boncuk | Turkey’s National Inquiry and Investigation Commission on Sunday expressed regret over the national investigation process in Israel over the attack on Mavi Marmara flotilla.

The Palestine Papers, Dr. Ilan Zvi Baron

from open Democracy News Analysis – by Dr. Ilan Zvi Baron

After the First World War, President Wilson called for the abolition of secret diplomacy as a means to further international peace and cooperation. This was the first of his fourteen points and it is very much in this spirit that Wikileaks functions and that the Palestine Papers were released. The big question that ultimately needs to be asked is whether or not the publication of these Papers is going to make any difference. Regardless of whether or not the Papers are genuine, it is highly plausible that the Palestine Papers will only serve to prolong the conflict. However, the benefit of the Papers is that they reveal that if a solution is going to be arrived at, some real ?creative thinking? is going to be necessary. There are five issues here.

Little optimism as Turkey hosts Iran nuclear talks, 89, Oliver Scanlan

from open Democracy News Analysis – by Oliver Scanlan

On Friday, the so-called P5+1 nations, the US, Russia, China, UK, France and Germany, began another phase of diplomatic negotiations with Iran over the future of its nuclear programme. The talks, hosted in Istanbul by the Turkish government, are aimed at making some headway in resolving an issue that has dominated the region for several years. Iran maintains that its nuclear programme is solely for civilian use; the permanent members of the UN security council, the US and UK in particular, are highly sceptical of this claim, alleging that Iran is developing a clandestine weapons programme.
